I Know #### about hunting. But I can hit anywhere I choose, up to 100 yrds with my VZ. Its so small and light, I thought i might take it for my first deer hunt. Our woods are thick and no long shots.

Just a thought........dont beat me up too bad:D:50cal:

Just make sure it cycles with softpoints and brass casings and check your POI vs the surplus (if that is what you have been using). I found that slighly polishing the sharp shoulders back from and to either side of the feed ramp helped it digest brass casings reliably.

The 7.62 x 39 SP's will kill deer with little fuss, given good shot placement. Similar velocities to a .30-30, but with a much lighter bullet.
However, I'd bet you'll be hassled by the CO's and other cops just because it looks like an AK.
Like ESQ says, sight in with the ammo you intend using before you go. Groups of 2 to 3 inches at 100 yards is good enough for deer.

2X also since you are in thick woods you may wish to use a shorter mag, 30 mag tends to get hung up.

have put down several mule deer at closer range with my sks.... longest shot, 70 yards..... made it 10 feet and dropped. shot placement is essential with this caliber though. Some guys feel more confident because it's a semi and rapid follow up shots are easy..... but this should never supercede shot placement.

M43 7.62x39mm and the 30-30 Winchester have almost the same power

30-30 has been called the "deerslayer" back in Alberta as long as I can remember...why not the M43?

I have a 5 round clip, so the only "evil' thing on it is the pistol grip. Anyone think i would seriously get hassled by the Ministry??? It is non-restricted and I have all the papers for it

to hell with the MNR your legal they dont have to like it

I shot my 1st deer with a norinco akm back when they were non restricted know your limits for range mine was approx 45 yards

You will need a 5 round mag to hunt with.......5 round clip would be handy to load the mag though.....:)

Maybe the same velocity. But the .30-30 throws a 170gr bullet.

With 150's or so they're identical. I'm not sure about how many people use 170's down south, but up north here 150s are the standard load in 30-30's. When I worked retail in a sports shop years ago, we sold cases of 150gr, and the odd box of 170's would sit on the shelves and get inventoried again next year. Now if you want anything other than 150's up here, you have to special order them.

Can we please not have the 30-30 vs 7.62x39 debate again. the SKS and 858 are fine. The arguement is purely academic, cause if it puts deer in the freezer it works plain and simple.

Hunting is way more about skill then it is about your weapon of choice.

Please mods don't let this happen again!

M43 is a militay ball ammo designation. FMJ is no good for hunting.
