Hunting dogs........?

That was last Saturday. Temps were going to 20deg so we were taking an extended break from the heat.

He looks like a true blue bird dog but truth be told he isn't as birdy as he should be. I spotted those two birds not him. We still had a good time nonetheless.

He was just testing you, thats all.
Great pic though, was that a cell phone pic ???
These small cameras these days.....

I have recommended a Springer as a do everything dog. My current black and white one has his quirks but has hunted land and water for every bird you would care to same. I’ve shot wild turkeys over him and snipe on the same walk. He will retrieve a 4ft cedar post mostly to hand. He would run himself to death if you asked him to, I really don’t think I’ll ever be without one. My two young kids play with him with no trouble.

He has killed a few cats but he will just bay a porky or a raccoon and wait for you to bring the gun. The only downside is he likes to dig. Otherwise eager to please and all go, he hunts circles around labs and is cheap to feed.

Second on the springers. Have seen him nose-to-nose with both porkys in the past and and every spring with skunks and has never attacked (yet, knock on wood). Basically, if there aren't wings he is not interested.

He will run himself to death, which is one of the reasons why he is close to retirement at 8 - may get a couple more years out of him but he sleeps alot more these days. Loves the ducks and water and is a killer retriever, but is not a fan of sitting still in a duck blind. No problem bringing a dropped goose out of the water. Really shines with woodcock, grouse and pheasants. Couldn't see hunting anything but a flushing dog, different mindset though. They hunt close, when they get birdy 100% of the time there will be a bird there (no false points), and they are solid retrievers. You just need to do your part and hit the bird.
