Okay so here's the issue..

I want to buy a Remignton 700P in .300WM for a hunting rifle. I just like the look and the style, especially with the bull barrel. However, one of my buddies is insisting that it's way too heavy for a hunting rifle. Personally I don't see the big deal. I've climbed mountains with my M-14 before and sure it's a little heavier but sometimes you just gotta suck it up, right? If anything I would imagine that the M-14 is heavier than the 700P, which is apparently 9lbs. I just want to know if anybody else owns a 700P and uses it for hunting. If so let me know what you think of it. It just seems to me that the whole weight issue is blown way out of proportion sometimes.

i pretty much use 700VS with big scopes for everything, i find that people worried about weight would be better served losing a couple of pounds themselves than their rifles ;)

I hunted with my 700VS for years. I think I took something like 5-6 moose with it and my brother a couple of more! It can get heavy by the end of the day though. You can certainly hunt with it, but it isn't the ideal walking hunting rifle, but works great for still/stand hunting. You might want to think about a Remington LVSF instead. Its a nice compromise between the heavy bull barrel of the 700P/700VS & the standard sporter weight bbls found of your standard 700BDL.

If you can pack it around, go for it. It doesn't bother me at all, though a smaller person might struggle a bit more. Also one of those neoprene slings makes a lot of weight disappear.

I do notice heavy barrel guns don't point as well when you're shooting them offhand, and they catch the wind a lot more, making it hard to hold them still. Kneeling, sitting or even leaning against a tree helps a lot

I just bought one of these today over the phone, and will pick it up tommorrow at the Swift Current gunshow tomorrow. How did I do at $850 new? I thought it would be a fun little toy to twist knobs and shoot paper.

Well I've been packing a Parker Hale 303 for all of my big game career to date. Let me tell ya, I ain't fat nor lazy, but after 10 years of packing 10lbs+ on my shoulder, I AM DONE WITH THAT. I bought a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless and she'll go in at 7lbs scoped. Sounds a lot better than the 10+ I've been packing.

If ya wanna pack around a heavy rifle, be my friggin guest. But let me tell you from experience, she gets real old real fast. Especially when you're doing 15km+ days. I am really looking forward to packin this Tikka around for a change.

The Remington Model 700P is a very cool rifle and fun to shoot but is not a very practical hunting rifle. You'll probably want to try it anyhow but will see that when a deer runs past you at 20 yards, you will have a challenge on your hands to shoulder that big rifle and find him in the scope.

It really depends on your style of hunting. Good luck and have fun!

Are you sure you bought a new 700P or was it a 700 SPS Tactical? I haven't seen a new 700P sell for less than $1000.00 in quite some time. With mark-up from a small retailer, I can see the SPS Tactical selling in that price range, however. They aren't the same beast!

That rifle was probably bigger than you were at the age of ten

It isn't a SPS, it's a 700P, Parkerised and set in a HS Precision stock. I don't want a Tupperware stock. It's been gathering dust for a couple years and the small retailer wants to move it already. I doubt that he made anything on it.

I gather then, that I got a decent deal? This one is in .300 Win Mag, not that that matters.

You've been hunting since you were 10?

Yep! You did more than okay on that deal.

Yup. Since I was ten. And yeah, she was a real SOB to hold on target when I was a kid! After two 303's (one Lee Enfield and one Parker Hale) my shoulder is wondering what the hell kind of pussy gun I am carrying around that doesn't weigh half a ton :D
