I know it's well known for moose and bear....not so much for deer. How bad is it really though? I've heard mixed reviews.

My son has some hockey camp stuff going on in the area and we have a few days extra near the end where I'm hoping to take him out. Maybe hike in a ways and spend a few nights.

Just wondering how disappointed I will be. :)

There’s nowhere to hunt around Espanola that doesn’t already have a mess of people already deer hunting in the area, lots of locals and increasing numbers or non-locals. The limited roads (and even on the lakes) are disgustingly full of hunters the last few years in particular. Seeing more and more deer in wmu 38 and 39 which has much less deer hunting pressure.

West of Iron Bridge ..... there are plenty. Almost ended up with "grilled Venison" a few times in that area. Plenty of Moose as well between Blind River and Iron Bridge, they too have been very close to "grilled Moose."

Thats unfortunate.

Im not looking to add to that.

I appreciate the info folks........going to do some google reconnaissance.

Not sure how busy things are out towards blind river and west, but there’s no shortage of deer out that way. I’m sure if you find some recent logging cuts up around Elliot lake you might be ae to get on some deer. North of the trans Canada and a little further east of there I’ve found surprisingly decent deer sign in logging cuts that are only a few years old/new from last winter.

There are also a few good areas up 129 north of Thessalon as well. If you get up as far as Black Creek and head in on the Kindiogami (sp?)Road, there has been some recent logging in the area.

That’s great to hear, I have lots of friends that hunt the island. The winters of 17/18 and 18/19 took quite a toll on the deer population along the north shore. Happy to hear the island is doing good.

I've seen 3 does, each with twins, this week alone. Several single does and several 2ish year old bucks. I also caught a glimpse of what must have been a 5+ year old buck. Very nice rack and he looked as healthy as I've ever seen. The last 2 years have been rough for sure, so much snow in the bush that loggers couldn't even get in to the property next to me.

I hunt and live by 10 mile point...where are you? Our property is not showing many deer right now but never seems to matter once all the hunters show up

I’m not in the area that the OP is interested in. But I thought I’d share this.

We usually get lots of Doe's on the property. Buck's....not so much. But this season, there's been lots of Buck's wandering through looking for Doe’s. My wife snapped these two today. I'm not sure if they're brothers (?). But they were together.

The Doe's feed at our bird feeders all the time. And they seem to teach the young ones just where it is and how to feed there. My wife said that the 2 Bucks were feeding at the feeders today too. Both these guys are 6 pointers. It does pi$$ me off that they head scrape my planted evergreens and destroy a lot of them.

(Sorry for the crappy image quality.)

Lived there for 4 month fall/winter forking for the mines. Saw everything but. Ran into foxes and bear coming home from the bar. Ran into partridge going into work. Watched a neighbour leave his house with a gun after work only to return a short time later with a at least a brace of hares

Off Dump Road, about 5km before Meldrum Bay. I don't hunt up here anymore, which is likely why I'm seeing all the deer. There's several hay/grass fields in this area and I see them in the fields or on their way to the fields at dusk.

I’m just outside spring bay. Dont get up there much but the last time I did there’s was more sign than years past. Hopefully it will be a good season.

Did some exploring mid oct west of Ironbridge. Lots of clear trails and deer ####, forgot to bring the trailcams, deer weren't in rut yet. Was -22 with snowfall last year. Going to be + double digits this year when we go..
