Downsizing and upgrading

I’m normally always in the store unless I’m visiting a customer or away hunting. I could use both of those powders and I have lots of powders you can use. Pm me the day before and we can make a plan.
 
I have about a dozen centre fire rifles, I have thought about downsizing but I like them all, but I have a few that do not get used that often, my rule or guideline now is if I buy one I sell one, I do not have any duplicates but I do have some overlap and I have a few that have been re-barrelled so I if I sold them I would never get my money back. Including my Wifes we have, 257 wby, 7-08, 30/30, 270 win, 338 win mag, 358 win, 9.3x62, 375 Ruger, 44 mag, 45/70, 450 Bushmaster. None are high end rifles, Henry, Marlin, Vanguards, Sako A7, BLR, Ruger, Win 70, Tikka. Someday I may buy one higher end walnut blued rifle with something like a Swarovski scope instead of my Zeiss, Leupolds, Bushnells and Vortex but I would not sell my other rifles to finance it. Over the last 15 years I bought and sold quite a few so I have formed my own opinions on what rifles I like and those that I do not.
 
Pretty much what I have always struggled with. Collect too many. Then don't shoot them all enough to justify keeping them, down size but upgrade the ones I keep.
I have come to realize I enjoy the tinkering as much as the shooting...when I get something dialed in I look forward to the next challenge or project.
Thinking about selling a few again to fund a full custom hunting rifle...
 
Smart to slim down and upgrade often unless you are a collector.

id rather hunt with one or two nice rifles than a half dozen beat up poorer quality rigs, not that a beater doesn't sometimes have its place.
 
Your thread topic is one that came up in a discussion with a friend and fellow site member. I'm at a point in time where I thought my age would 'suggest' I consider thinning things out a little. My friend clarified things out with his 'assessment'. He reminded me, "You don't have a collection but over your life time, you have accumulated an assortment of decent quality hunting rifles, decent quality shotguns and decent quality handguns". " USE and continue to ENJOY them". "If you're not short of cash, let your kids sort those things out should that 'time' come, unexpectedly". ;) I've decided to take his advice :) .
 
I think scaling down and getting exactly what you want is a good plan. All my rifles I have now, I really enjoy shooting. I have a few shotguns that I am holding for my sons, they mean little to me. So, I just spend less time on here to lead me away from temptation. ;)
 
The trouble with downsizing is that once you decide to do exactly that there will be numerous opportunities (to buy really nice guns at really good prices) pop up that are too good to pass up.

I have that beater frankenrifle in 300H&H in the safe. I like it, it shoots well. I think I should keep it, but then another, more classic 300H&H pops up that is a nicer gun and at a good price.

What's a guy to do? :)
 
I only downsize to fund a higher quality gun. I did a big purge so i could put 20% down on my house when i had an empty bank account though. I do keep guns that have sentimental value even though they arent high grade guns or even good looking ones. If starting from scratch if i could do it all again id have fewer guns and theyd be high end pieces but i started out in a family of hunters with just basic hunting guns. Wasnt until my early 20s i discovered that theres more and i bought lots. Now that im almost 40 with a modest collection i can walk thru my gun room and each rifle or scattergun has meaning. Either i won a skeet or trap shoot with it or killed a certain animal with it or it belonged to a friend since passed. Its worth more than money. Yet i look at medals and trophys from other sports or parts of my life and honestly dont know why i keep them because i dobt have much memory attached to the event i earned them in
Any gun i dont feel that connection with has a price tag
My collection will surely grow but im only aquiring guns that i really want

Good question ;). Slowly but surely over the years, my rate of 'acquisition' remained fairly constant. That 'pace' rapidly increased after I opted to retire early. With this additional spare time, some of my former wants/interests changed to :redface: 'needs'. The next thing I knew, I was now experiencing duplications + in many calibres. The purchasing, trading, wheeling & dealing, reloading for and shooting of ate up much of that 'spare time'. ;) Life is good!
 
yup. I have way too many rifles and shotguns, and I have been pushing myself to cull the herd. I must say it rather difficult, my Father's, the one or two my Father bought for Me, the ones you will never find another of.....uggh! But I have way too many, and wish I could start fresh, knowing what I know now (almost 53). Probably not sell the nostalgia, but I should be able to get bye with only another dozen I would think. Less excuses, and reasons why, at the top of the list.

Of all the guns I have Ive only purchased two for myself. One is a 22 and I dont plan getting rid of it, and the other is a 77/44 that I may sell some day to fund another project. I like it but its not a "never sell gun".

The rest have sentimental value or were gifts I was instructed I was never to sell (theyre to be given away to a new hunter or returned to original owner if I no longer want them)
