How would you guys rate the reloading starter kits. In terms of quality and needing everything to start you off. I know RCBS makes a couple kits and Im guessing LEE does aswell.

Im thinking about getting into reloading and would like to know what kit is good in terms of quality (meaning wont break, good for the money, and will last some time). Ill for surely be reloading for my 30-06 then probly moving into 9mm.

Lets hear it.

If you are loading for accuracy, I would start with a press and dies plus a good powder scale and powder trickler. The el cheapo starter sets with dippers as powder measures will never give you variable results
Just my two bits worth anyway.

cheers mooncoon

I agree with mooncoon, although RCBS and probably a few others, put out some decent 'packages'. I have a press and a set of '06 dies. If you're interested, send me a PM.

I agree with stubblejumper,
only Lee worth consideration is auto-primer, the rest is very cheaply made.
RCBS RC in my opinion is bare minimum for some quality.

Good Luck

i bought the LEE challenger anniversary kit and it come's with a powder scale and perfict powder measure as well as a priming tool and a set of various shell holder's.... as with just about any kit out there you will need a caliper and a few other odd's and end's... if your just doing rifle ammo in small batches like hunting ammo supply for your .06 then the challenger or RCBS kit's are great for geting started, move into reloading a couple thousand 9mm cases a month and your going to NEED a progressive press or you will spend more time loading then shooting...

i can easily clean/size/prime/charge/seat 100rnd's of rifle ammo in a afternoon or split it up to a couple afternoon's work with a single stage press...

if your not sure you will want to do a lot of reloading then dont pay big buck's for some ultra wiz-bang semi progressive auto indexing safety bar guide fed thingamajigger when a single stage O-frame press and a scale are all that's needed

After 21 years my RCBS RS3 beginners kit is still working fine. I broke a pin 2 years ago, and they replaced it free. Lee, with the exception of their crimp dies are just junk. Where else do you find dies that you do a fine adjustment with a pipe wrench??

I also have a Lee starter set. I used to shoot alot. Not so much now, but I've had it for years, with no problems. Somthing else I enjoy using are the LeeLoader hand tools. I'm not sure where they got lost in the mainstream, but they don't get taken very seriously. That's too bad, because they are very capable of making very accurate ammunition. And I think their fun to use too.

My thoughts

I just started reloading and decided to try and keep it cheap. The rock chucker kit is 400$. I got a Lee handpress, scale, 30-06 dies, auto prime, case trimer, shellholders, primers and powder for 235$. Also picked up a Lee Loader for 270 for 10$. I love the stuff, makes great ammo, fits in my duffle bag, lets me load away from home. I got a case stuck the other night and the hand press pulled the case rim right off, so I think it' tough enough. THe Loader is a bit primitive but I think it's fun to use and my 270 Winnie shoots 1 inch with it. Not bad for 10 bucks. I sure the RCBS stuff is nicer quality and maybe when my 32$ handpress breaks that's what I'll replace it with, but until then, I'll stick with the Lee brand. I used the extra $$ to buy a Chony and that is far more important I think then the ###y loading gear...just my 02 cents.

aside from the de-capper rod i have yet to find any threaded parts on my die's that cant be adjusted or tightend by hand... i would kinda like to know what your describing incase i run into in the future?

Everyone is going to say RCBS. But that isn't quite so. They all make decent equipment. Before Lee came out with the Classic press,I used a Challenger.I wanted something better,so I asked on the net. One fellow was looking for a really accurately made press,he bought a Hornady,a Lyman and a RCBS. Of the ones he bought the most accurate was the Lymans. But he felt it was more a question of luck of the draw then paint colour. Those who have used both perfer the Lee Classic over the RCBS Rockchucker.

For a Kit:
Press: Lee Classic
Scale: Ohaus 5-0-5,RCBS,I think Hornady,Lymans and Redding sell it,too
Powder Measure: Lee Perfect, the only one that does extruded powder well
Priming: Lee Auto Prime
Triming,I use the Lee system,it cuts square and is cheap, but I'm sure there is a good lathe type.

For dies,I have had best luck with Lee and Redding.

Lee kit

I bought a Lee aniversary kit when I started. I pounded out alot of rounds with it. I think I paid 160.00 or so for it. Everything is still in working condition. What more do you want from something.

I just bought a used Rock Chucker package. It cost me 350.00 used with tons of extras. If you side by each the press' you wonder how the Lee ever lasted. I am sure the RCII will outlast me and 3 generations from now. I just had to have it!:jerkit:

Just the way I see it:rolleyes:
