Russian-contract Winchester M1895 rifle

Came from Spain to the US in the 1960s along with an amazing variety of other arms. The 1895s were in "well loved" condition.

"Well loved" is an interesting description. I saw a batch of them at Williams Gunsight in Davison Michigan in the 60s, and the were in really rugged condition. I would assume that they had been supplied to the International Bridages by the Soviets during the Spanish Civil War, and sold surplus along with the load of other rifles.

I examined one of these in the Nylands Brigade museum at Tomassari,Finland close to 20 yrs ago.It was pretty well beat up,but was a curiosity after seeing quite a few sporters back home. It was in full stock musket configuration c/w bayonet lug.

Hate to burst your bubble but, very large numbers were imported into the US back in the earlt 60s by Hunters Lodge in Virginia.... Some were pretty nice.

As for those left "in the grease" in what used to be the Soviet Union, of all the goodies I have seen or been offered these were never spoken of.... Mind you that means nothing.... I would have thought that in travelling that part of the globe for more than two decades one would hear something....

I was at a US auction last weekend, near Gettysburg Pennsylvania, and a very nice example sold for $7000 USD. The auctioneer told the crowd that the number of phone calls and email inquiries for that rifle was impressive.

According to a US Importer who has seen them, the M-95's in Russia are well worn, with shot out bores and have been rebuilt and electro-penciled to match just like the RC Mausers on the market now and the Russians think they are made out of gold like the WW2 Kar-43's they also have in storage.

Well as a collector and shooter of both Winchesters and Imperial Russian 'things', the Russian 1895 Winchester is one of my 'holy grails'.

I will have one one day!!

I have a 1895 SRC in 303 to tide me over until then. I have to say, the 1895 is one hell of a snappy looking rifle and built like a brick ####house.

Buddy of mine in Finland has a bubba Russian Win M1895. Fairly good shape, just not original. Its a moose gun now.

In the mid 1990s I remember seeing them every now and again at the Finnish gun shows.

Cheers,

I agree, they are an elegant rifle. They hold and fit your shoulder so well. JMB was a genius.
