M14, Can it Contend with a Heavy Barreled Bolt Action????

I think that is an apple and orange thing, I have a older tikka and with it's hunting barrel a fine tuned handloads it will put 3 holes in quarter. My M14 I doubt ever will. But I have much more fun shooting the M14. If you want a sniper rig, heavy barreled bolt cannot be beat. I got excited seeing all the the m14's in Iraq but after reading the article in this months S.O.F. The snipers feel they are being ill equipped using these out dated rifles To them this is not a sniper rig.

soldier of fortune is a whiner's rag- or at least it was- during the 80's they'd publish anybody that was in nam that had a story to tell, including the remfs, desk boys whatever- a little deeper digging would usually reveal that the source usually hadn't been outside the barracks door
while i'll give you that this is not necessarily a sniper's rig, a lot of it has to do with the MINDSET- the m14 in it's xm21-m21 guise did a lot of damage in the highlands in nam and carried on in the idf( i was lucky enough to get 3 of those, but the biggers took the mounts and nimrod scopes off) and is properly defined as a SCOUT/observer,with sniping capabilities-

OK, I have a new question. I have read Skullboy's and Hungry's post about. It sounds like a 500 to 600 yard sniper rifle is completely possible but I keep on reading about how much it will cost to build it. So my question is what is the ball park picture for cost? I want to know all the angles before I jump in with both feet. Anyone have a break down???????

cost

Try $4000 - 5000.00 to build a complete rifle up to match spec's complete with a top name scope that still will not compete with a bolt gun. Trust me, I built one.

first thing i'd do is BUY the norinco and SEE how it shoots BEFORE monkeying with the rifle- YOU may NOT have to do any more than replace the stock, shim the gas cylinder and put a decent set of optics and mount on it- the other half of the equation which nobody has talked about yet is LOAD DEVELOPMENT- a good pet load , properly developed, can do wonders for your rifle-either way you've got an EXCELLENT battle rifle and a better hunter/plinker than most

Ditto, same here, mine ran $5k with optics. That said, I think for $1500 before optics (you spend on that with whatever rifle you buy) you can build a very good rig, and if I was doing it again that's the route I'd take.

I know that alot of the S.O.F. stuff is huee. The topic here is m14 vs a sniper rig, the jist of the article is they would prefer a bolt rifle. I do agree with you I think the accuracy of the m14 is decent I have shimmed the gas chamber and dropped it in a U.S.G.I. stock, with open sights and umc rems. I can get 1.5" groups in the 5 shots there is always two touching. that ain't bad. with some good optics and dialed in handloads I would expect 1 m.o.a

that's exactly what you should expect- you'll notice that i've posted 20 round groups about the size of a loonie/toonie at 100 with mine, but i've done a HECK of a lot of work re load development with it, and it still sits in the chu stock because it;s a nice fat stock and shoots well in it
