The hair on the back of your neck...

Oooo! Lucky you! A Panda Bear tag!

Time to start a Panda defence thread.

Yeah that was cheeky sorry hawk-i.
In Alberta they give you two over the counter black bear tags per year but the one is only good for certain areas. The government conceded to the anti's in 2006 and banned the grizzly bear hunt. There was talk about getting it going again but it is an uphill battle.

It looks more than a day old, no? In the picture it looks as if the skin on the skull has already been separated and starting to decompose

The ravens were on it pretty good and they only had the head to work on. They can really clean stuff up.

I heard wolves howling in the area this morning, was working my way towards them when I heard the birds on this elk. I expect them to find the carcass through the birds and clean it up overnight. Which they hadn’t, yet.

Might go back this weekend with another guy and get the antlers. I wasn’t in that frame of mind by myself this morning sidestepping piles of bear #### on my way out of there.

Some of the responders on this thread didn't realize the OP was talking about the grizzly that was likely guarding this food source. "Oblivious" gets you killed in the bush.

Yeah no problem...I grew up in AB..but left in 91.
We use to hunt for grizzly around Hinton and up on the 15th baseline on the Berlin river, nice country up that way.
I had a grizz try to run me off an Archery 5 point elk kill in willmore in the mid 80's...that was exciting only had my bow and a skinning knife.

So, do you think a person did that? or do you think a bear buried it planning to come back later?

I would be surprised if a person would go to that much trouble. Better (easier) to just walk away and deny everything, especially when you leave it half uncovered

You must be from Ontario. :)

You can get a found wildlife permit for those, nice rack. i always pay attention to ravens and crows, they know their business. Once led me to a cow elk with a collar. Expired battery so they let me keep it, interesting keepsake.

Grizz

Cougars kill and bury their food. Only way to find out is dig it up and look for bullet holes. Or chew marks on neck. Still a cool find.

Just a kinda cool reminder that no matter who you think you are or what gear you have, y'all are not always the "apex predator" out there!!! Slip and sprain your knee and a grizz (or a cougar) does that to you!!! Find a mule deer under a spruce tree, mostly covered in branches and grass - probably a cougar - out in open like that with dirt tore up - there is a grizz not far away. Like OP said - hairs on back of your neck!!!!

I’ve never had a grizzly encounter. Black bears yes but I’m not sure how I’d react if a grizzly was inside 100 yards and even looked at me the wrong way. Seeing them first is another issue. I walked 4km into this area in the dark today as I usually do. When I’m alone I always have one in the chamber. Gives me a bit of reassurance. Better than nothing I guess.

Pretty spooky. I was deer hunting and walking out on a logging road and came across two elk legs sticking straight up out the of the centre of the road grade. Incredibly powerful animals. Also had a small grizzly steal 4 quarters of a moose and bury them in the duff on a fly in hunt. Got those back though! Learned a valuable lesson about walking back to your meat cache without one in the pipe and your head on a swivel.
