Lol xr5 binos are 12-14k at a site sponsor, I’d much rather go with a high end Gen 3 GCIS or in that ballpark I’d stretch for the Optiks 15’s as a stand along bino setup that offers tons of versatility.

Agreed, new XR5 are pretty pricey, and better bang for buck can be had with Gen 3 or Echo's. But it was a useful example of not losing 100 yards of visibility to gen 3 by going to gen 2+.

A bit off topic, but how long should a tube last? I see 10 000 hour rating for some, but lets say you don't use it much (once or twice a year with proper storage), will that shorten the tubes life span?

Nope. When it's not in use, the tube shouldn't be degrading.

Dang, actinblack quoted me 6k before shipping and tax for a pvs14 with just a regular gen 2 photonis echo tube

Really I only paid 4K Canadian. Hmmmm ACTIN BLACK is taking advantage of the market.
