223 or 22-250 for coyotes

I would take a .223 over 22-250, Ive owned both and shot both quite abit.
-.223 can be shot and hits can be seen through the scope vs a 22-250 which usually has too much recoil
-.223 has plety of power to kill a coyote past 250 yards which is a long shot with a .22 cal, anything past this is greatly effected by wind drift. Not many guys shoot coyotes at 400 yards with any .22 cal
- brass is pretty much given away for a .223 due to it being a military round and bulk ammo is cheap
-.223 is a good fur round loaded w/ a good hollow point bullet
-known for its accuracy
-alot quieter to shoot then the 22-250

Both rounds are pretty much top sellers for varmint guns, some guys like the 250 some the .223, maybe try shooting both and see what you like. I know if I were looking for a new coyote gun Id be buying a .204 :D

Cheers!!

Very true but the comment came up that Bill c68 never heard of someone burning out a barrel with normal use, just giving some context on how it could happen and the difference between PEI normal use and Alberta normal use (most guys don't have two rigs).

manI wish we had those pesky rodents (groundhogs) around here... I shot one in NB last year.... 7mm-08 .

I think shooting ground squirrels in those numbers would be too much fun to care if I burned out a bbl... it would be worth it!.

I went with the 223 for the same reason-you can watch the hit in the scope. Not going to happen with a 22-250. Also way less kick. The cheap shooting is also a draw. I got lots of brass cheap so now I will reload and save way more money. Also an excuse to shoot more. I shoot the 223 while I am waiting for barrels to cool at the range and it gives me a rest from the recoil too. Pretty pleasant for a smoker. My all around fun gun.
