Ontario crown land

If you hunt on crown land and you can drive a vehicle to your stand don't be surprised if ATV's are driving by all day as that is how some hunt. Having said that this year while moose hunting in Ontario 21A I was late one morning getting to my set up and I found another hunter there. I asked him if he was going to stay and he said yes but would be gone by 1030. My set up was obvious but there was no one there so he just figured he would stay. That was his right but I was not too happy at the time. We were camped at the end of an old dead end forestry road that you had to drive through 100 yds. of flooded road from a beaver dam so we didn't think anyone would bother us but we were wrong.

The problem with much of Eastern Ontario's Crown land is the network of highway-like logging roads constructed in recent decades and the labyrinth of ATV trails that dissect it make for very easy motorized access. It is literally impossible to get more than 1 - 2 km from some type of motorized trail in most Eastern Ontario Crown land.

I like what the U.S. does with designated non-motorized areas - but that is never going to fly in Canada with so many hunters literally dependent on their ATV/UTV and such a rule wouldn't apply to First Nations hunters anyway ...

Damn wolves. The PETA folks need to realize that everything has a consequence. Up by my place you can hunt wolves if you have a tag, I saw 3 last year and this year none so far. I do hear them howling away in the middle of the day in summer though. Dirty buggers

Most guys won’t go far off a trail. I’ve had some pretty good luck hunting crown land. I did have 2 tires slashed once years ago though but that was at a public land tract near the GTA. Out where I live that’s not a problem.

Spot on - this was the primary area I was referring to. Insane the massive increase in traffic there in the last decade

Very good points. I like the idea of going deeper into the woods where there are less people. However I am just worried about dragging the deer out. My fat ### hasnt lifted a weight for like 4 years ago

Go on Facebook ontario deer hunters page. Seen some hilarious videos from this year crown land hunting.

Video #1 middle aged man yelling at another hunter in the ground blind that he can't hunt there as its his spot. Goes on for about 6mins of yelling before guy just turns around and stands in front of the blind.

Video #2 Guy is filming from his blind as some random hunter is taking a s#!+ about 20 yards in front of his blind in the middle of the bush.

Lots of guys crying about others walking past their stand. I hunt a bit of crown myself, Way off the beaten path and have yet to run into anyone else.

I looked but could not find those videos but my Facebook skills are somewhat lacking. I did get on the Ontario deer hunters page though and there are some good videos.

closer to the metropolitans the more degens you going to meet. Some people takes ownership of crownland b/c they been there for couple years, I try to stay away from cottage country. life is more enjoyable without interactions with degens.

I would look to small parcels (100 acre lots) surrounded by private.

They may be overlooked as hunting options by larger groups.

I gave up on dragging deer unless they are very close to camp/vehicle or I have lots of help. Skin and quarter them right where they lay put the quarters in a pack and carry out about 1/3 of the weight you would drag. I don't get quite as nice of meat cuts but its much easier than getting a gutted deer out of the bush and then throwing out 2/3rds of that weight.
