Cantilever slug guns - accuracy?

I've been looking at slug guns. The option of a cantilever slug barrel is certainly handy, but I'm not convinced the accuracy would be good. Anyone have any experience with a cantilever scope mount slug gun? How's the accuracy/consistency?

Why would the accuracy be bad?

Your optic is mounted directly to your barrel.... doesn't get much more consistent than that.

This is what I get out of mine at 100 meters ... consistently ... 870 Police, 12ga, and Hastings Cantilever barrel ... 1 -4x scope ...

Good enough for hunting!!

There are reports that when you shoot a cantilever barrel a lot ... that the barrel heats up ... that the point of impact shifts ....

But how many shots do you need to kill a deer?

With the right sabots accuracy can be pretty good, the expensive part of the equation is testing out sabots. You should look at the price of 12g or 20g sabot slugs before you buy a barrel, be prepared for some sticker shock lol.

The theory is that the scope mounted to the barrel will be more consistent than the scope mounted to the receiver. The reason being that when you remove the barrel to clean it, it may not go back to precisely the same position in the receiver when re-installed. With the scope mounted to the barrel, it eliminates this possibly affecting your zero. I have a Mossberg 500 set up as a dedicated slug gun with a scope mounted on the receiver and have not experienced any need to re-sight it after dis-assembly/ re-assembly, though I do check it on paper.

So your cantilever slug gun shoots pretty good?
Mine will clover leaf 3 shots at 100yds shooting from a rest. I think they are better than having the scope on the receiver. You could pin the barrel and mitigate the movement between shots if you want to put a scope on the receiver.

Yes, interesting that my gunsmith mentioned pinning the barrel in pump/semi's improve slug gun accuracy.

What brand of sabots are you using?

I was wondering the same .... clover leaf at 100yds and with a slug gun is impressive ...!!

What setup are you using Dilly?? Feel like sharing?

What gun, what caliber, what barrel, what ammo, what scope .... etc.

I have a basic 2 3/4” Remington Wingmaster, but I scored a barrel from Cabelas years ago that I have never seen offered for sale again. It was made by Ithaca for the 870. It has very heavy barrel walls and has to be tapped into the receiver with a rubber mallet. I shoot Hornady SST sabots and I can only get that accuracy if I use a lead sled because the trigger still sucks. It’s an unusually good shooter.

Scope is a bushnell banner. Nothing special except for the 6” eye relief. This helps because it has a Knoxx stock and moves back if your aren’t careful. It has a “power pack” with a comb riser that gets your head up to the scope.

Thanks for the breakdown, it sounds like a good combo. Hornady sst sabots are the best I’ve found so far but I’d like to get my hands on some 12g accutips to compare, I keep hearing good things about them.

Because the mating of the barrel to the receiver can be poor. Not wanting to permanently pin my 870 cantilever barrel, I followed some advice (probable from here) to make a shim from beer can aluminum inserted between the barrel and the receiver. This significantly improved my groups.

Ah, I see where you're coming from.

@ninepointer, "Why would the accuracy be bad?" referred to a cantilever barrel where the scope or optic is mounted to the barrel ... and not to the receiver. With a cantilever setup you can have lots of wiggle between the barrel and the receiver ... but your gun will still shoot to point of aim consistently.
