I just picked up a minty 1985 JM .22 Win mag .Never owned one before but I think I'll shoot it a little to see if it's something I can use.They are a little much for feathered game like grouse unless headshot.Perfect trapping gun for beaver or dispatching coyotes.From what I've read ammo matched to what the gun like is the trick.Expensive at $18-$20/50rds and non -reloadable. Anyone use one on coyotes and what's the effective range?
 
Imo the 22 mag is a great small game caliber.
Carry one on the trapline all the time.
Have taken Coyotes out to 100 yds and many Beaver at various ranges
 
22 Mag is a great round which offers, as one of my best friends has said: "Jacketed projectiles that aren't a drip of lead like 22LR/L/S..."

I like that it IS a 100+ yard capable round as well... And while I like the 22LR just fine, I see it as a ~50m or closer cartridge for hunting...

Odd thing on the Marlin 25M, they made the safety backwards? The new version called the Marlin 25MN the safety was reversed.
 
I got a Marlin XT-22 tube fed when they went on clearance for $199.

I topped it with a Bushnell Trophy XLT 4-12x40AO scope that was also on clearance @ $99!

Talk about a GREAT deal 'eh? Here's a pic.

The Hornady 30gr V-max is made for them by CCI .Apparently CCI white poly tip is the same ammo different label and the most accurate from what I've read.What kind of 100 yard groups are you getting?
 
From what I've read a good .22 mag will do 1.5"-2 " at 100 yards with ammo it likes.I have a box of CCI FMJ and one box of Federal ammo that came with the gun also FMJ' .I picked up a box of Hornady 30gr V-MAX as well.Seeing the .22 mag is a hunting /trapping gun it is a little behind in target grade ammunition development.

My 25M doesn't like CCI at all for some reason. It likes the Federal 50 gr. better, and the Winchester grey box stuff. Super X, I think. The Federals are supposed to be sized slightly bigger. IIRC it did alright with 40 gr. FMJ also.
