Famae

I've never actually measured my groups before, nor have I shot match grade ammo with it. Shooting from either prone or off of my knee i can hit 8 inch gongs at 250 meters with iron sites and surplus ammo. That's good enough for me
So, I tried some of the LC surplus ammo and it shot like garbage, it was literally shooting patterns.. So I decided to develop a load for it...

That's the typical performance that I was getting today while shooting from a bench, with some front support and a rear bag. I had a 4x fixed scope with a QD mount on the rifle.
The recipe that works in my rifle is: Lake City brass primed with military primers (I bought 300 pieces of primed LC brass), 40.8gr of RE15, SMK 175, 2.795 OAL
MagnetoSpeed recorded 2300 fps average velocity for 5 shots

I'm pretty happy with the results so far, next load that I'm going to develop will be using 147gr Campro bullets to make it cheaper to shoot..

Nothing wrong with that group. Adding an optic would definitely help tighten up my groups, but iam an old soul in a younger man's body lol. Iam just sticking to the iron sights lol. May put a eotech on it tho

I like iron sights too btw. I did my initial load development with irons at 50 yds and then confirmed it with optics at 100 yds. I just wanted to verify that feedback saying that it's 2.5 MOA rifle at best with good ammo. Well, I can see it can do better than that with right ammo. That's about that level of accuracy that I expect from a battle rifle. I'm fighting with FTF problems now, mag followers are kinda sticky and every other time it jams because the round is fed into the chamber at a weird angle. I tinkered with mags enough so that I can now manually cycle through a full mag of snap caps without issues, so hopefully next range trip will confirm that the problem is gone.

Tightening up the fit between gas block and barrel made a big difference with mine. I shimmed it with aluminum foil (needs replacing from time to time). I need to try some shim stock to try a more permanent solution.

I've had my 540 for a couple years. I have put thousands of rounds through it.

In all this time I have had one issued which required some tedium. The gas block got dirty so I decided to fully remove it to clean it right out, to achieve this you have to punch a roll pin off. The roll pins used by FAMAE are brutal and hard to get out.

Once I got it all out and cleaned up it worked fine. The reason I realized it was probably too dirty inside there was the detent on the gas selector stuck INTO the knob. I popped it off, put it in a cup of boiling water and it popped out so rapidly the knob flew out of the glass.

I've had good groups with the rifle at 100 yards it seems to perform best with 60ish grain rounds. In the thousands I've fired I have had a few jams and what not but it's often mag related. I just put a mark on the bottom of my mags that way I can tell what to expect, the good ones vs the bad ones etc.

Love the gun, most enjoyable to operate that I have ever used. Almost all of my shooting has been with irons, but sometimes a red dot.

I'm late to thread here but I've had my 542 for about five years now, although I've only fired a few hundred rounds through it. I've used mostly Hirtenberger surplus with a bit of old DAQ surplus making up the rest. I've found it very pleasant to shoot, comfortable with manageable recoil. I wrote a detailed post here when I first received the rifle.

Are these still being imported? Doesn’t seem to be much info available beyond 2015. I guess I should have set aside for one when I had the chance.

I don't believe so, someone may have better info than me lol. Only downside in my opinion is expensive mags lol

FAMAE started making IWI Galil ACE around 2014, because the Galil was chosen to replace the 540 as the standard Chilean army rifle. They are also selling their own copies of Galil to other neighbouring countries.

My guess is that unless there is a very big order, the 540 is probably dead in the water....since 4 or 5 years ago.

Tactical Imports is managing that relationship now, they can order you anything but expect a lead time of many months, and they only order in batches. Good thing these rifles are rock solid.

FAMAE also went through a modernization period for them as well as offering a wood furniture sporting version for export. They partnered with Taurus in to also make 540 platforms for Brazil.

Problem with Tactical Imports is the last order we placed for Famae parts only took 2 years to get the items, and they came with wrong items and other parts missing, of course you have to paid up front, then try to get you money back from them, good luck
