Hey Rimfire folks,

Was at the range couple of weeks back, finished up a steel challenge. On the way to my car I noticed on another range there was a Mapleseed event going on. If I had time I would've stopped in to ask about it. So for those of you that have shot this, what is it all about? Is it a form of OPRS? I hear about it a lot on Slamfire radio, and by the way why is it called Mapleseed? Do you need an expensive, buy once cry once set up to participate?

PS. I have a GSG16, can I use that for Mapleseed?

My other question is for OPRS, what kind of budget do I need for a buy once cry once set up?

Thanks in advance.
Ray

Mapleseed is a Canadian derivative of the US Appleseed program. It is a shooting skills training movement to move up from simply having it, to shooting it well. Were you at EOSC?

Mapleseed is a great program to teach marksmanship fundamentals. Great building blocks. Go to an orps match in Stitsville and see the different options available. Most will let you handle and try the different guns out there. You can shoot any rifle I own. Shoot me a PM and ill bring a variety for you to try and even supply the shells. Your welcome to shoot with our group. Shoot me a PM if you plan to attend a match and we will help get you squared away. Cheers Chris

Thanks Chris, how often do you guys do a shoot?

There is usually a shoot once every month. The range in Stitsville is the usual site but Oct/Nov is extremely busy for the range due to all the different hunting seasons, so they are not held there for those two months. Should be one coming up in December. I’ll send you a pm when I find out the date.

A gsg16 probably wouldn't be the best choice, but if you can sling it and shoot it prone off a sling comfortably & properly, it'll do

Depends what class you want to compete in and if you eventually want to move into CRPS/Northern Rimfire.

Production Class is any gun with a MSRP of $500 and an Optic with a MSRP of $700. Open division is no price limits.

A common production gun would be something like a Savage MKII FV SR with a Vortex Diamondback tactical

Open Guns range from Tikka's in chassis to custom vudoo V22's actions in aftermarket chassis. Rigs costing in the $4000-$6000 range with optics, chassis, ARCA rails and all the doodads are common.

For mapleseed you could join the project mapleseed group on Facebook for more information, they fill up quick! Something to consider is becoming a member of project mapleseed, I believe members are given first crack at signups!

For ORPS and CRPS join the Canadian Rimfire precision series group on Facebook to stay up to date with future events and to join in discussion,

Mapleseed in a nutshell

Training on sling use, natural point of aim, breathing and shooting from standing, sitting(kneeling) and prone.

You need two mags as you load 8 in one 2 in the other to do 10 round targets, this is based on Garand clips

You shoot targets timed 1 minute to5 minutes, if you score well you get "patched up"

Very difficult to do, I've attended three and still have only come close. It's amazing how your shooting improves but
by the end of the day dips because of fatigue.

Bring elbow and knee pads if you are older.

They suggest a Marlin 795 or a 10/22

Hope this helps

Bring semi's and not bolt, interesting...is it for the time factor?

In the 1 minute challenge it is hard to get 10 aimed shots off with a bolt rifle and do the mag changes.
First year I brought a
Win 9422 no good

Second year 10/22 with irons
My eyes aren't that good

Third try Brno #1 with glass
My best score to date but no patch
I took the bolt rifle to be more " sporting" as I saw glass as an unfair advantage

If they held an event in Manitoba, I'd like to go with my boys.

We held one this year at the WRPA. We were supposed to hold another one in Virden, but had to cancel due to lack of interest. Put some pressure on your range to have them host one.
