i was wondering if anyone knows how often should a choke be changed, im sure after a certain amount of shots gone through it that it gets worn and is not longer the size that it started at. I have a Remington 870 express with a modified choke shooting only steel out of it for duck hunting. if anyone knows or is able to give me some info it would be greatly appreciated.

I've never heard of a choke 'wearing' out like you say. So what if it opens up a bit?

Like the other posts state agreen, I doubt the tube would wear out, but if you use that tube always, it might be a good idea to remove it once in a while and and give the threads a coat of oil and replace it to make sure it doesn't get seized.
 
I think if you use a bit of molyebdum grease, you'll never have to worry about it seizing.
 
Doesn't the use of steel shot, in a shotgun manufactured in the 'pre steel' era have a a tendency to gradually force the choke to open?? :confused:That's what I've been lead to believe. Anyone know for sure?
 
I have an 870 magmun and the choke blew out after 3 years of steel shot.
When I took the choke out of the barrel the wall thickness of the choke was paper thin!!! Don't know if the choke was faulty or not the new one is a year old and doesn't show any wear.????
 
Can anyone tell me where I can obtain an XFULL or XXFULL PORTED turkey choke for a Mossberg Model 500 .20 gauge. I have exhausted all efforts to find one in Canada and U.S companies want outrageous prices to send one to Canada. Must be ported because I have health problems related to recoil ( broken neck ).

I'd be a lot more concerned with removing the build-up of plastic residue from inside the choke tube than I would ever be about wearing a choke tube out.

I've put maybe 15 to 20 thousand rounds through a single "Light Modified" Optima Choke ... no signs of wear and no noticeable variation in pattern.

Speaking of plastic residue, what is the fastest and easiest way to remove it? I have seen it so thick that I could peel it out with a jack knife. What product do you use for removal or better still maintenance and prevention?
