I’m considering purchasing a bore scope for barrel cleaning inspection purposes. Nothing to expensive but wondering if you require a 90 degree camera or are there any cheaper Amazon/EBay specials anyone can recommend. Wifi is ok, smallest I can find is 5.5mm but most have camera directly on the cable end and I’m concerned the view won’t be correct.

Thanks

I bought a Teslong endoscope for around 50.00 Cdn off amazon. It comes with angled mirror attachments for looking at sides. Plugs into my laptop.

The teslong one is widely used on some gun forums. I cant seem to find it on amazon right now but here is the manufacturer link take the space out between . and com

Thanks, that’s kind of what I’ve heard and read that they are likely the best option. I’ll be checking to see if they ship to Canada as says no longer available on Amazon.ca and post what I find out.

The Amazon stuff is hit-and-miss for quality. I have one that was around $50 and straight on, the camera is "ok" but the mirror fixture is pretty much useless but I have seen photo's offered up here that are very worthwhile having at around the same price-point.

If someone could show me what a carbon ring looks like in a 22 rimfire.

Cleaned and scrubbed but still get a first shot flyer from a clean cold barrel.

Looks clean but don't know why the flyer is occurring. In the time it takes to reset targets the flyer occurs on the first shot.

Fouler shot, sometimes this is just how barrels are.

Some rifles require fouling before grouping settles... sometimes only one shot, sometime more. You just need to learn your rifle... a bore scope is certainly not a requirement... it's just the latest toy.

I know, just another toy for my obsession:) but sometimes I’m curious and the Teslong would maybe save me some grief when cruising through the used guns at the local GS. The price on these if I can find one isn’t any more than a couple of boxes of bullets.

So my Teslong finally arrived today. Bought directly from Manufacturers, was held up at customs for a week but no biggy. Got the complete unit with the 4.5” screen and 36” flexible wand. Tested it out on a few rifles from the safe and there’s definitely some interesting stuff inside those old bores ! A few excellent shooters don’t look so good, some look great and some have some hidden deposits of gold. Or I mean copper :)

I have two Teslongs now. I bought one earlier this year that only worked on a PC. Lately I bought another one that works on iPad, iPhone and a PC. Cat's meow. Far more than a toy for me. I have a small collection of military rifles (approx. 150) and have put mine to good use determining the condition of the barrels and chambers. A barrel can look just wonderful by looking down with a bore light, but it will be sometimes scary to see footage of the barrel as seen by a camera. I have started a winter project of checking each rifle and giving it the necessary cleaning and or scrubbing.

ps I think the last one might also work with a Steroid - No! - Anderoid!!

Carbon Ring pics from Teslong borescope

Of course they're made in China - says so on amazon. The ones that were on sale thru the Spring and Summer seem to be out of stock, but Teslong has some others slightly more expensive ( + $10-20) that 'look OK'. And there are other brands that prob are using the same parts. The Wifi one are intriguing, but the one I got this summer is fine. Warning !! The cable that has the Lens is very fragile and should NOT be coiled after you receive the pkg. I hang mine on the wall of my workshop with the USB cable hanging on the hook, not the Fiber-optic cable. The first one I got 'failed' after 5-6 uses and the Mfr sent a replacement N/C. I was 'coiling' the whole set-up into a 12" loop and that may have been too tight for the Optic cable - USB cable is OK to coil but I don't now anyway.
Here's a pic of the carbon in my Savage 64, with 'normal' cleaning and several of rounds (5 years worth). Top of pic is chamber -bottom is first rifling. Cleaned up just fine using Boretech C4 Carbon Solvent, letting it soak a half-hour or so then using a good 'All-Brass' brush. Second pic is after cleaning. :) Carbon was thru all the bore, too. Third pic is the barrel at the muzzle b4 cleaning - before using Boretech C4. Now the buildup isn't so bad after a couple hundred rounds. The boretech even gets my SKS 'pretty clean' tho 70 years of corrosive is hard to get rid of. Still working on that one  That was really scary when I got it !!:eek:

BTW - some others have commented on the quality of the bore pics, but remember they're copied from my laptop to Postimage. org then to this forum. And they look better "Live" anyway.

endoscope sells the now - waiting for mine to arrive

Endoscopes and firearms borescopes may not necessarily produce the same view. Endoscopes often only give an image of what is directly ahead of the probe/camera, a look down the length of the bore. A borescope will show what is 90 degrees from the end of the probe. This is achieved by a mirror-like surface in front of the probe/camera at 45 degrees. This allows the borescope to show the surface of the bore/rifling.

The Teslong borescope that has been available from Amazon is a very good value. For less than $100 it allows the user to see head on images of the rifling. It can even produce a video of the inside of the bore.
