He's 100% correct in that there is literally zero hunting skill required to "hunt" at extreme range. Definitely shooting skills are required, but zero hunting skill, much like hunting from a truck....

What irks me is his so called ethics about long range and shooting something out a window of a truck.
if you read the first post, the hunter is barely able to walk because of MS, good on the OP for teaching him to shoot at distance .
I don't begrudge anyone who shoots at distances shorter than I do but don't be telling me how far I should shoot- which BTW I am very capable of doing at long range , I just choose not to shoot longer than 300 meters at animals and the majority of my kills in the last 50 years have been under 150 meters

Thanks for all the comments guys, I respect everyone opinions on the subject. I knew it would bring a lot of controversy. The thing is this shot was more ethical than most people’s off hand shots at 100 yards. I have a proven load that I know the ballistics of. The gun shoots less than 4” groups at 800 yards. How many of the people with negative comments have put in the time to do load development and build a gun that is capable of that at even 400 yards? The scope is a 5-30x56 Sig Saur Tango Six you could see that deer better at 800 yards than most peoples 3x9x40s could see a deer at 200. I use a gunworks BR2500 which ranges to half a yard out to 2500 yards and has a weather meter and balistics calculator that gives dope out to 1400 yards which I have proven to 1100 yards. There was zero wind, the shot was prone from a sand bag which was rock solid. Yes there is less hunting skill involved in a long range shot but as stated in the OP my friend has MS and cannot walk much more than 10-15 yards at a time. I guess some people would rather I drive him around and let him shoot out the window like a majority of the able bodied hunters do around the country? I understand people feeling a certain way about long range shooting but educate yourself and have a little understanding for the situation first.

It never occurred to me that a well practiced long range shot wouldn't be considered "hunting". Christ, I'm happy if it drops let alone 800 yards away. Ignore them. You did well and helped out a friend in need. If that isn't good enough for the curmudgeons around here, put me on ignore. Great result with practiced approach and for a friend that cant walk through a slash pile to get 30 meters away. You did well and should be proud. I'm proud of you. My brother is proud of you and others old and new are proud of you and your friend. Lay on an extra layer of sunscreen as there is always a couple that will denigrate any hunting story.

Beautiful shot and buck, I have nothing but respect for anyone that has put in the time it takes to make that shot happen. Your friend must be stoked. It’s amazing when skill and the elements come together like that, no wind was a huge advantage.

Thank you! Wind the night before was probably 30kmph I never would have let him take the shot.

I was going to say you must be new here, but then I saw the post count.

This is a par for the course response from people who have no idea the time people put in to being able to make shots like this on command, or simply just have nothing better to do.

It would be like a soldier on the front line talking ill of the sniper protecting him on overwatch because he didn't get up close and personal like he did.

never had that animal that you were never able to get close to?

I had a few of those and decided I needed to learn how to better prepare for all situations that may present themselves rather than just go home empty handed if I couldn't get within 5,10, 25,50,100yds or whatever range someone on the internet has decided the limit is for "hunting skill"
 
Thats some great shooting, Congrats to your friend for taking the time to learn how to shoot like that. Its goes to show that practice makes perfect.
 
Nice shooting, congrats to your friend, that’s definitely a shot to be proud of and what a story you gave him. skills....absolutely, ethical...well what’s not ethical about it, well placed with confidence, one shot kill, does it get any better, some are just envious.

Unethical is what I’ve seen around here where 3 gents hanging onto roll bar driving around shooting everything that moves, and same gents coming out of the bush at 3am when I am heading into my spot.

Don’t let anyone take this away from you, it’s just different kind of sport than they know. Happy hunting

Many times, that's why its called hunting and not shooting...

You cannot understand the difference between 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 800 yards? At 800 yards everything to do with hunting is irrelevant. You're essentially shooting a target with a heartbeat.

Yes, excellent marksmanship. But long range shooting is no better than the "hunters" who drive around and shoot from their truck.


Gone are the days of hunters wanting to get close. Sad, really.

Just like deer being attracted to chainsaws/logging, many people have stories of coyotes coming to investigate gunshots because they associate gunshots with gut piles. A dinner bell type thing.

I've taken a few coyotes while out rabbit hunting. Shoot a rabbit, field dress it, setup near the hide/guts and start calling. You'd be surprised how well it works.

Everything you said is wrong. Thousands of hunters go out prepared to make shots out to 500 yards ( sheep, caribou, open country deer ) because that may be required in the circumstances they hunt. And it may be the style of hunt they choose.

I used to be the designated guy in camp to sit on a rock that provided shots on whitetail out to 500 or more. I had proper equipment and practised with it. Staying still for hours on end at 10 below and still being able to make humane shots over 300 yards sure felt like hunting, even though none of the deer had no clue I was there. ( Farthest was 400 yds ).

Been bow hunting for decades, and love that style for the special rewards it gives. But I don't begrudge or look down on hunters who choose other styles/formats.

Does the truck hunting you speak of involve breaking the law, trespassing?

To the OP, great video, really enjoyed it, as much from the human aspect as anything. Looking forward to more !
