About $200.00

roughly how much $ would i be looking at to have one of these:?

Enough with this boys, the guy just asked a simple question and it was not insulting at all.

Manbearpig, about $200.00 give or take a bit… The smith/welder is located in western Quebec. PM me if you want his co-ordinates and references.

I went to a local craftsman and asked him to cut and crown two 870 barrels to 24 inches and reinstall the sights. Simple job? I forgot to mention that I wanted a decent job. Actually I did not want to insult him because he was a craftsman and in turn he issulted me. The barrels looked like they were put over his knee and cut with a hack and then dragged along a side walk to work out the rough edges. To top it off, one of the sights the craftsman installed to his carefully measured tolerances blew out on the first shot. This craftsman has his shop in Calgary and I would be happy to provide his name by PM if anyone is interested.

It is appropriate to ask if he does or is capbale of simple work.

If a charlatan is posing as a craftsman that is the same as if a charlatan poses as a lawyer, mechanic or home renovator. There are crooks out there. My position is that you do not contact an individual to do work for you on the premise that he won't or can't deliver. If you have reason to suspect that an individual cannot deliver his end of the bargain why would you approach him to do the work in the first place? If you do get stung by such a person there are other remedies, but if he is a decent person I would expect him to make the job right either by returning the piece to him or by accepting a refund.

thanks - someone brought up the stainless issue - for around $200 would the smith provide the bolt handle or do i have to source a stainless one as well?

would i have to ship the entire rifle or do most smiths have access to a Ruger M77 Mark II to test the handle on? would be much more convenient to just send the bolt - just wondering, never did any mail-order gunsmithing transactions before :)

I will call him today, but from what I understood, you need only to ship the bolt and he takes care of the rest himself. Where would you be shipping the bolt from?

I will check to be sure, or better yet if you wish, I can PM you with all the info on how to get a hold of him and you can deal with him directly.

Do you speak French? His English is not bad, but his French is much better.

Robert

i guarantee my french is worse than his english :)
im in southern ontario.

before you bother him let me actually order the rifle first, the bolt i have pictured is from another ruger rifle. was interested in a ballpark figure so i know roughly how much this is all going to cost - i still need a rear ruger peep sight as well.

I'm interested to see how it will look. Is the stock inletted for the dogleg shape of the bolt? I've never seen a butterknife with a dogleg in it.
