Hello,

I have a Model 70 in 375 H&H - Looks to be 1956 production. It looks to be in quite good condition. I had a gunsmith go over it and give me a thumbs up as it was sitting in a safe for a very long time.

I'm looking at selling it but I'm having trouble assessing what this thing might be worth.

Any help / info would be appreciated.

Cheers!

I have the same rifle, same year, along with 3/4 box of ammunition my grandmother bought with the rifle.

As for value, sorry I’m of no help, but I’d lean towards priceless. Fabulous rifles!!

Worth $2k and up depending on how nice it is and the buyer’s desire.

We need good quality pics so we can judge condition. Refinish, extra holes, replaced recoil pad, shortened stock or barrel, all have an effect on value.

The recoil pad is a replacement, and I have a suspicion the stock has been refinished. The "two-tone" metal finish, with the matte receiver and glossy barrel is actually correct. Rifle dates to 1956. I would say $1800-2000 is not unrealistic.

Yes. The recoil pad says "The Custom Gun Shop, Edmonton Alberta". I just added a pic of it to the mega link.

And a couple of pictures of the top of the receiver/scope mount/rear right.

Is a 1956 barrel correct without that "lump" - that bulge or boss for the rear sight to sit on?? I just do not know.

Answering my own question, I guess?? I have now seen a couple pictures in "Finn Aargaard - Selected Works" that show his "old" pre-64 375 H&H that does not appear to have that barrel "boss", like on my pre-64 M70 in 30-06.

Thank-you Rod for posting - looks like we were typing at the same time...

I have the same gun same year no barrel boss my gun has the original red solid Winchester pad . Turned down $2500 US last year. You have a nice piece i would keep it .

Looking at the pics on my phone, it appears to be a standard grade, all original unaltered with the exception of the recoil pad. Pre-64 prices are all over the map and its important to compare apples to apples. Current price in Canada for a new Winchester model 70 Safari Express is $1350.00 USD. That works out to north of $1730+ CDN.

People will pay a premium for a pre-64, how much of a premium depends on several factors and what a buyer is willing to pay. There are a couple of people on CGN that are very knowledgeable on pre-64 model 70.

Here's a photo of my pre-64 375 H&H.

Nice gun Rod. Something about that red recoil pad that just turns me on.

I bought a 2012 Shot Show Special Model 70 Alaskan in 375 as i could not find a pre 64, nor afford one at that time. I do not care for the stock configurations as it doesn't allow easy line up with the sights. I would love to get a super grade stock for it. The Alaskan I have has a nice sleek contour though and is quite light though which is a treat to carry.
