Who on CGN has some info on the .30 Gibbs?

this i assume to be able to rechamber a 30-06 barrel into it and should give very close to 300 WSM ballistics? is that right?

Im googling the hell out of this for realistic LH Abolt Rechamber once i sell the 35 Whelen and 7mm Rem mag, pending how the cartridge performs in a 22 inch barrel..... it may need the 24 to improve over the 3006 somewhat? although i am keen to hear more about it?

i cant see why it doesnt Cover my bush stalking with the 180gr Woodleigh and the 500m stuff with a similiar "eldx" type sleek projectiles.... i do not see myself hunting game at over 500m, plinking, sure, but realistic... im really leaning toward thinning the herd for One..go to an a few , other :) (ruger1, mod94, 12g,etc)
Cheers!

User "dan belisle" is someone who has actually owned, loaded for and shot many Gibbs chamberings.

The .30 Gibbs is a 30-06 maximized in all dimensions to increase case capacity. At 30-06 pressures, it will exceed the 30-06 by 75-100 fps - still 100 fps short of the 300 WSM.

As PO Ackley said 60 years ago, all .30/06 based improved cartridges hold great merit when loading bullets heavier than 150 grs. Gibbs recommended that handloaders begin 3-4 grs below maximum and use "good case life over repeated firing" as the criteria rather than velocity alone. Ackley goes on to note that when fireforming the Gibbs or other improved cartridges, its beneficial to have the bullets seated out far enough to be in firm contact with the lands. The 180 gr .30 Gibbs load quoted in Volume II of Ackley's book is 64 grs of 4350 for 3137 fps from a 1:10 barrel; no barrel length was mentioned, but we can assume he was referring to a 24" barrel which was standard for the .30/06 in the '50s.

I've had a couple 30 Gibbs, currently putting another together. As well as 6.5, 7, and 8mm Gibbs. It is a good improved cartridge, though making cases is more time consuming than the Ackley or RCBS versions. The Gibbs is the fastest of the lot, even quicker than the 30 Hawk I had, particularly with heavier bullets. It will equal the WSM in velocities, or at least the one I had. - dan

Load a 30 Gibbs to the limit of the brass and you will be able to drive 180's at about 2925 fps. Load a 30/06 to the same pressure levels and you will achieve around 2850. Gibbs considered the brass case to be the limiting factor and had particular lots of GI brass he recommended for top loads. Put those loads in a piece of Remington brass and you would blow the primer right out. In general, if one wants a 300 Mag, he should buy a 300 Mag.

Never had a 30- Gibbs, but used a 270 Gibbs for a while. A rechambered Ruger No 1, it made an easy 3400 fps with 130s and 3100+ with 150s. Long case life, very accurate, it was a fine sheep, caribou, bear, and moose outfit. It went to a fellow in Atlin, who I think is still using it.

Forming cases for it was ABC simple, just neck down until the new brass was crush fit in the Gibbs chamber, and fire with full power load.

The 30 Gibbs would need to have the case necked up to 35 or so, and then resized to crush fit in the chamber.

I never had a 270 version. You are correct, as usual. Either neck up 30-06 brass then neck back down, or neck down 35 Whelen brass. For the 240 I used 25-06 brass, for the 6.5 270 brass, etc. They are a good cartridge. - dan

Or just spend the extra money you would have used to ream it out and acquire new brass on more bullets and powder. The 3006 you have will do 500m all day long with practise

I had an old Parker-Hale 1200 that had been rechambered to .30 Gibbs. Hunted with it for a bunch of years. I had a load with RL 22 that gave close to 3000 fps with a 180gr Speer grand slam out of a 24" barrel. It was stupid accurate but making brass was a pain so I ended up rebarrelling the rifle to 6.5-06 AI and picked up a .308 Norma Mag to fill the gap that parting with the Gibbs had left.

haha Sweet replies, hard crowd, still weighing up the 7mm/338 but after looking at the 30 gibbs, and whats mentioned above, for the particular 30-06, i would eventually most likely Ackley improve it at best to keep standard brass gathering a simple process, an the gain will mostly be in case appearance and Kool factors... until then, The #### I cull Wont Know the Difference ehh... ha ha.

i guess, we could talk rechambering the 7mm Rem mag into a 308 Rem mag.... that would be kind of cool.. EH

haha.. git starffed.
