Anyone ever use a M-1 carbine?

My first ever CQB match was shot with an M1 Carbine. It was all I had at the time and another ORA member was kind enough to lend me their backup pistol. A Para in .45acp. Loaned on the spot to a newb. Very kind and generous. It was quite a warm welcome that I received.
I spent most of my day those years ago, learning the match CoF. I can’t say the M1 platform or myself was anything competitive under those circumstances. Back then we also did a “hot” transition to your secondary. What I Can say is the safety (Turn style) and mag release do not exactly lend itself to being speedy. It also doesn’t have a bolt hold open on the last round.
It’s an excellent cartridge for those distances and From what I remember groupings wise, It was just like any 5.56 bullet hose. Shooting irons is a lost art and should be practiced more.
I like seeing the old milsurp stuff come out. Even if they’re not top of the competitive advantage, it’s nice to see shooters have success with the old ways.

I don’t like that I was forced to be in this situation, but it’s better than not shooting I guess.
Buddy on my MRA Renegade: built with everything stripped off my SR including IBI barrel plus the usual AR parts. Unless Santa delivers a Christmas miracle to the OIC BS, this is what I’ll use for next year.
We ran a modified mini match this last wknd and it’s going to take a little getting used to. The one advantage of the Renegade though is the AR similarity.

No reason it couldn't be used. A member here shot NSCC with a K98k.
Only disadvantages to an M-1 are iron sights and more recoil to manage.
Some shooters in the US still shoot their NM CoF with M-1s and M-14 types.

I think some brave soul tried the EOSC Mil Surp match with a carbine.

The Garands and No.4s have been the winningest rifles overall, but bursts of performance from K31s and SKS's (who would have thought?) make the top finishers unpredictable.

Lately, I’ve been playing and tinkering with 2 platforms:

1) Remmy M700 .223 in Magpul Hunter with AICS (Accurate Mag) 223 x 10 rounders. This barrel is the usual Remmy Sporter configuration of 22” and has a 12” twist barrel (it’s annoying for SR out to 500m)

2) Ruger American Ranch 5.56 NATO that takes AR Mags $699 at Tenda (15 Dec 2020). The factory barrel is a 16” long tube in 8” twist. Hoping to develop a load with my beloved 68 gr Hornady HPBT and SMK 69 gr boooolits.

The Remmy has been sold off to a friend who needed a coyote rig (that was easy to sell). Now to get working on this Ruger American Ranch 5.56 with AR mags.... I can still use all my Magpul PMags 5/30 version. Yahoooo!!

Hi Barney,
I thought about a traditional bolt gun as well, and some over here have, or one of the few semiautos still out there, but decided to go this route instead. I get the to use what I currently have; AR bits including an amazing IBI barrel, and the AR modularity / familiarity is a big plus for me.

Being able to use a magazine that can be used as a monopod is worthwhile.
The Ruger and the straight pull LPC and MRA allow use of the excellent AR type magazines.
Another option is a 700 or other rifle with a detachable magazine system, with extensions on the magazines to duplicate AR length.
A chassis stock allows use of AR butts and grips, so there are handling similarities with ARs.
I think that the Ruger might be the cost effective best buy, right out of the box. Top it off with a suitable optic and head for the range. Let's face it - the straight pull uppers and lowers (which allow use of on hand AR parts) cost more than the Ruger rifle.

Hey Barney, I feel your pain. I too miss competing with my ARs. This past summer I've done some research into setting up a bolt action rifle for CQB/SR so I can still hopefully participate next year in CQB. We all know that the Canadian Rangers have participated in SR matches since forever with their No4s so it can be done! I've decided to purchase the Ruger American Ranch 5.56 NATO that uses AR mags. This way I can use all the mags I accumulated over the years for AR15s and continue to use the my existing Tac vest set up. Also, as mentioned, I can use the 30/5 mags as a mono pod for prone shooting. Similar to the No4, the Ruger can be fired using the middle finger on the trigger and keeping hold of the bolt knob for quick follow up shots. I have made a number of modifications to the stock rifle. I've smoothed up the bolt camming surfaces, installed a muzzle brake, lightened the trigger pull to about 2lbs, removed some stock material around the mag release, installed a Magpul foregrip and put an different butt plate on. As it sits here, it's a very fast quick handling short rifle and I just love it. Accuracy is equal or better than most ARs IMHO. You mentioned your favourite boolit, the Sierra 69gr Match. This load uses Lake City cases, 25gr H4895 and Federal 205 primers. This load shoots well under 1MOA in my rifle. I transferred my ACOG from one of my AR15s to this rifle and it works just fine. I looks a little funky but it works. I hope to see all my SR buddies on the range come 2021 with opportunity to shoot using semi-auto and bolt action rifles.

Those groups are pretty respectable patterns. Looking forward to this evolution.

For the rest of you watching/observing/ lurking; this RAR ran me $699 (15 Dec 2020) at GoTenda or Tenda; local CGN Board Sponsor. Plus taxes, plus shipping. And the best part is that it COMES With the picatinny rail. And a 16.2” medium profile barrel, AND the 1/2” x 28 tpi muzzle threading, and the AR mag capability....let’s see if / when Remmy can step up to that value point. And Let me remind you that I AM a Remmy fan boy (hey, I’m ex-infantry; we are known for doing stupid things....)

Now to dig through my parts drawer and examine/ look / search for an A2 Flash Hider, for old time’s sake until I can decide what muzzle brake I want/need/desire.

And I was also thinking about a threaded bolt handle upgrade from GoBigTactical in Prince George for $80. It’s made by Anarchy Outdoors from USA. So we shall see what we can do with this future SR wannabe....

I’ve always been a Remmy 700 fan as you know, but I was disappointed with their choices/options for a sporter profile barrel from their factory (likely a 12” or 14” twist). So it was strange to let that 700 SPS .223 go to another CGN shooter/Varminter. You know that I’m a Remmy fan boy especially with all the aftermarket goodies out there among our Board sponsors. But Ruger hit the ball outta the park with this RAR rig and I’m impressed so far.

Time to play with that G&G Varmint Bolt knob from our machining friends down in South Africa. I found one on eBay in Australia. Thinking of pulling the trigger on this add - on and seeing how it shapes up for other bolt handles. $79 Aussie dollars. Plus shipping, too.

Yeah, I just found that one in my parts bin. It's an old Bishop butt plate that came with a nice Bishop semi-inletted blank way back for my Sako. At that time I installed a Pachmayr butt plate so I put this one away. The top hole matched up with Ruger stock but not the bottom hole. I filled the existing hole with epoxy and drilled a new bottom hole. The butt plate needed a good amount of trimming as well but it turned out pretty good. I like it a lot better than the factory pad wich was way to "grippy" for me. Amazon.ca probably has something you can use or modify to what you need. Avoid the bakelite plates, they shatter when you try to drill them, ask me why....

Apparently an AR15A1 or A2 butt trap buttplate goes on using the same screw holes as the Ruger Ranch Rifle.

Shame you didn't keep the 700. I have a stainless T3x 6.5 Creedmoor action, IBI barrel, MDT LSS chassis and mags being built into a 'Rebel Rifle' by Keith C. Good luck with that Ruger.....

Are you willing to bet that our liberal masters will "allow" us to continue to have semi-auto firearms? For many of us on a fixed income, investing in more semi-auto firearms that are still non-prohibited is not an option. I now have half a dozen or so of probibs in my safe that I can't shoot or even sell. I don't want to add more to this sorry lot in the coming years. Just my $0.02. But, to each his own, I can understand both sides of the argument.
