Good day fellow GCNer's,

I'm new to this forum, as evidenced by my lack of knowledge about air rifles.

I'm hoping to get my 12 yr old son a sub 500 fps air rifle for Christmas, but I'm not sure what my best options are. I had a crossman pump action when I was a kid (until the cops took it away, justifiably), but it was what it was and I'm hoping to find something a little more rewarding.

I bought a Stoger air rifle a few years back, a 1200 fps one, but I was very disappointed with the trigger pull on it and ended up giving it away.

I'm wondering if there might be some suggestions for a new or used sub 500 fps rifle that would fit the bill for my son around the $150 - $200 range.

Many thanks for the read, eager to hear any suggestions.

Pick anything up at the local Canadian Tire, Princess Auto, or Bass Pro. It's his first so I wouldn't break the budget for it. Probably going to just shoot frogs and get it taken away by the cops anyway lol. I think PA has one on sale right now.

I think the Ruger Explorer is explicitly designed as a starter air rifle. The very similar Umarex Embark (https://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2017/12/umarex-embark-breakbarrel-spring-rifle-part-5/) is a more target-oriented version (non-fibre optic sights, heavier barrel) for youth target shooting programs in the US

Airgun Source has them at $110, but there's a used NIB one at CanadianAirCollector (used/consignment side of DL Airguns) for less than half that right now.

A Good spring powered air rifle with iron sights, and the option of mounting a scope if needed, use a break barrel or underlever, 177 or 22 is fine, this will teach him not to flinch on recoil and reduce trigger snatch, so when and if he wants to go PCP it will a doddle for him to shoot and as with all beginners, drumming safety into that trigger finger is a must

Crosman phantom is good. I've got one in .22 and another in .177. Both are plenty accurate.

1x more vote for crossman phantom, easy to tune also if you choose to. Very accurate with the crossman premiers also. The last one I bought was on sale at crappytire for $89
