Is this massively unsafe?

WTF are you talking about? Did I miss something? Did they shoot at him? I thought they shot the decoy?

Or is it against the law to hear another hunter's shots in your area?

Well - You can be thankful that they didnt tag the decoy and put it on the hood of their car. Hunting on crown land near large urban centres is a waste of time, and potentially hazardous to your health.
Join a local fish and game club, get to know a few folks, and you can get yourself into a camp. Most camps face an aging membership, and would welcome some new blood. The real benefit is that they will show you the ropes - there are some skills involved, as I found out years ago. BTW - Decoys work best with ducks,,,

If they shot the decoy deer in the ASS, I would have to question their ethics and hunting ability. How do you get heart/lungs through the bung-hole? Sounds like you ran into a party of real hunters.

I would go knock on some doors and ask permission to hunt some private land.

Even signed land might be opened to you if they like the cut of your jib.

you need to go back and read!!!
i said 'until they pull the trigger'
knowing people are in the area and still let a shot off IS dangerous/unsafe use of a firearm. how many people/houses/equipment get shot by these idiots who knew that people or property is around but still feel the need to take a shot at some 'game'?.... too F**K'n many... start reporting these idiots!

I did go back and read. I still have no idea what you are saying.

Report them for what?

Don't get frustrated! Find a new place! In Canada every idiot who has 100 bucks can hunt. Remember that and find permission to hunt on private land to protect yourself from wandering morons.

So the answer is that the good guys need to move off the PUBLIC land and let the idiots completely take over and pull the trigger on anything that moves because their lives are on the line?

Report them for what? Discharging a firearm during hunting season?

Sounds like they broke the law to me.

The first thing I learned this week is that 25-30ft into the bush and hunter orange disappears. I was using a 308win that will have a killing range of over a kilometer easy.

*Sounds like they didn't see you.:(

We had setup a decoy as someone had suggested it could help. Well the decoy now has a hole in its ass.

*Was your decoy a buck or doe and was the season open for that gender?
If not the only charge could be for poaching out of season.;)

* Get a tree stand if your going to have a real looking decoy on the ground so your out of the line of fire.Or hunt in swamps where the lazy hunters dont go and the big deer hide to get away from them.:)

Bit of topic here but I have encountered 2 decoys (1 doe and 1 bull Elk) After an intital rush of adrenalin , a quick look through the bino's showed them to be decoys. The Elk was in scrub at over 300 yds, these things are so realistic looking that they should get shot.

Should proof read me own screed!

I meant to say that they ARE NOT so realistic looking, well it's the fact that they don't move that gives it away.

Yeah. Start waving that one around. Next thing you know, if you cleanly miss your game you will be charged with careless discharge.

Look, just because someone else shows up on public land and shoots at a decoy does not mean they did anything legally wrong. Proving they disturbed a legal hunt would be next to impossible unless you could prove they knew you were there. Just as proving any careless firearms handling.

Do I condone the actions of these guys? No. All I'm saying is if you hunt on public land, you better darn well expect at least some of the public to show up. If they actually did something illegal, then by all means report them. Whining and making up reasons why they should not be there solves nothing. Maybe next time walk up to them and see if they want to talk about it.

So yes, harden the #### up.

On the off-chance that blaze orange would have identified him as a hunter, he might not have been shot.

Hyjack over .............

.

Or maybe if the guy that shot the hunter from the truck (illegal) actually had binoculars with him and some common sense to use them. A rifle scope would have also helped the shooter identify what he was shooting at before he pulled the trigger, but he did not have one on his old military clunker. I am also pretty sure that the guy admitted he needed glasses but did not have them with him

Saw a deer and let the lead fly :jerkit:

In the zone that this happened both whitetail and mule deer bucks are open. But only for November are whitetail does. How did this guy know what type of deer he was shooting at?

But yes Cub I agree, if a hunter is dumb enough to use a decoy on crown land he or she had better be lit up like a Christmas tree, especially when he or she is taking it to the set up spot. Because with all the other idiots out there, lead will probably fly and who knows where...

Hijack over ;)
