New hunting rifle

Your words . . . "I have quite a few of rifles but none that have become the "one""!

That could be a starting point based on what you like/dislike about each one.

Of all the suggestions you would want to study the pros and cons of each.

What would be in your "Top Ten" list will not necessarily be on someone else's priority.
In my case a detachable magazine would never be on the list since my mainstay is a Remington 700 and I have never lost a mag.
Stepping back to a magazine, assuming that rates high on your list, how is the release accessed, does it drop out easy, does it bind going in and what is the possibility of accidentally dropping the mag . . . a lost mag!

If you have not got a list you are not serious enough yet!

Check out Howa. Best kept secret I think as far as a quality affordable rifles. Winchester comes a close second. Ultimately it should fit like a glove, you can shoot it accurately, and come in a caliber that is versatile for everything you hunt.

The Vanguard comes with a longer barrel then a lot of it`s competition. That`s something to consider. Too bad it wasn`t made in LH configuration. As far as a go to rifle I`d have to roll back the clock to about 1986 and pick up the Sako AV.

Howas are weatherbys in a different shirt or vice versa. Winchesters are Brownings

Sako/Tika, Winchester/browning, weatherby/Howa in that order

Personally I like the Win m70 featherweights as a very nice economy level rifle.

Want a cheap gun that will likely out shoot all of the above go Savage. Fit and finish is their sacrifice.

Not to split hairs but Weatherby Vanguards are built by Howa. Howa rifles are not built by Weatherby. Weatherby Vanguards are also not built by Weatherby.

Howa also used to build rifles for Smith and Wesson to sell under their brand.

Winchesters are not Browning's and Browning's are not Winchesters. Both brands are owned by the same company however.

Pick up a M70 Supergrade in something like 7X57 or .280 or the boring old .30/06... it will be worthy of a heritage firearm.

Yes! A Winchester M70 Supergrade in 30-06 is a perfect all-round rifle for Canada. Not high end or bargain basement crap but a good solid blue-collar rifle.

For a forever rifle I would go with a full custom. For a factory rifle my suggestion is a Kimber 84L in either a walnut or carbon fibre stock. Why pack extra weight if you don't have to. No need to upgrade the stock.

there are some cases where i feel the 30-06 is a little under powered.

I could agree with that.

Merry Christmas Phil.

I agree on making of list of what you want in your "one rifle".
What is about the rifles that you own that you like?
What is it about the rifles on your list that you like?
What is it about the Boyd's stocks that you like? e.g. Aesthetics? Stability? Warmth of wood?
And, what is about all of the above that does not work for you?
What and where are you hunting and/or shooting? Game animals? Terrain types? Distances?
These will assist you in determining which caliber/cartridge is most suitable for your needs.
Once you determine what rifle features you are looking for in your one rifle, you can then determine exactly what "you" are looking for. No one else can do this for you. They can only help you ask the right questions.
As mentioned above, this quest is all part of the challenge and the fun of determining what the one rifle will be to you. And once you determine this, buy or build your rifle, and successfully use it in the field on many adventures, and create many fond memories with it, you will appreciate this journey even more!
Best of luck in your quest!

My forever rifle is a Ruger M77 tang safety in 308WIN. I don't see me ever finding a rifle I like more.

Some people hate them. I don't.

With the tang safety M77 accuracy is luck of the draw. Ruger was putting 3rd party barrels on these rifles and while some were excellent a lot were tomato stakes.

Ya. Mine won't win any competitions but it's certainly acceptable for a hunting rifle. Most factory ammo shoots 1.25-1.5" groups at 100m. The best grouping I've had was cloverleafs with a particular Winchester load.

It's fit is perfect though. Feels like an extension of my arm when I pick it up. That counts for more then worrying about a 1/4" better group
