Help me tacticool my shockwave for coolness and scariness...and bear defence...

I have an 870 I put in a tacticool ATI stock and mounted a 14" barrel on a few years ago when it was much harder to get a Mossberg with a 14" barrel. It's cool and all but my first pump shotgun was a 500 and the slide release on the 870 drives me nuts. I picked up a shockwave with the intention of swapping out the stock and replacing the 870 (yes it might be for sale soon) that I pack around when bow hunting in grizzly country.

I want it to look cool and scary but obviously the more important thing is the bear protection part. I carried the 870 on a single-point sling and let it hang behind my back on the right side. With the cool pistol grip on my tacticooler ATI setup, it was very comfortable and easy to rest my right hand on the grip and a nice natural fluid movement to raise it up and aim at something.

Let's get this out of the way, I've only done this in real life during practice. The only grizzly bears I've shouldered my sweet and scary looking gun at have been in my dreams that ended with a cool story and a non-life threatening scar somewhere that the chicks think is hot.

I'd like to put on a stock with a pistol grip but my only concern is about how hard it will be to work the safety. Also, the Magpul stocks are ugly. I'm sure they feel nice but I want something that will convert a dirty hippy chick to the dark side if I happen to come across one in the bush. Bonus points if it's a recoil-reducing stock. I'm only putting slugs in it and it would be fun to shoot it a bit more than just sighting it in before getting a bruised shoulder.

I have a Sparc II to put on it so I will need a rail of some sort as well if you have any extra tips. Eventually I will mod a Magpul fore-end to fit and mount a flashlight but for now the factory fore-end is ok.

Thanks!

You find guns scary? What makes it look cool or scary?
I think cool would be a 1920's german sxs. And scary would be one that didnt function perfectly when you needed it the most.

Sup?

The only part not shown is the extended action release. I think with all the parts I paid about $1k. The Surefire you can either find the one made for the short 14" fore end or just counter drill a regular one like I did. The safety is large enough or can be enlarged to hit off quickly while only rotating your shooting hand up. With the Mesa adapter just toss on stock X and grip Y and go nuts!

Thank you for the help!

Tell me more about the action release...That stock is pretty nice looking. er I mean cool and scary.

I edited that post with more info.

As for the action release, its from Shoten Armory in the US.

It replaces the factory one with a dogleg of varying lengths.

Oh, and the stock is amazing. If you can ever get a ACE SOCOM stock, they're foam padded on the tube and usually come with a nice thick recoil pad. Running heavy loads is nothing.

IMHO the only way to accurately shoot a pistol grip SG is with a high quality, rigid folding stock. Shot placement is EVERYTHING.

I am a strong proponent for Choate top folders. Yes they are ugly but I only care about function. Choates lock up solid, are made of steel and Choate US supports their products, even with Canadian clients. They sent me a new butt plate for free, on an old folder that I was the 3rd owner of.

Thanks for the added info and pics. I think I’ll be copying some of what you’ve done.

Love the look of the choate top folder, however, on a 14 inch barrel mossberg, its under the magic 26 inches.

Your bet option is still the magpul, with a provision for a qd sling point on the stock and a GG&G sling point, ether for a magpul para clip or another qd swivel that fits under the mag cap , so you can switch between single and 2 point any time.
The mesa with a crosshair recoil buffer + magpul CTR stock and a limbsaver pad , they make one for the magpul ctr /moe stock, is about the most you can do for recoil reduction, aside from going to a reduced recoil ammo.

And a third option, a speedfeed stock with a limbsaver pad , love the limbsaver pad , I cut down my speedfeed stock about a 1/4 , upside, just that little bit of length reduction makes it shoulder better for me , down side, it'll only hold 4 rounds of 2 3/4 , not 4 rounds of 3 inch in the stock.

I also wouldn't use a side saddle, just adds more bulk , if the ammo in the mag doesn't get you out of a spot of bother, you're most likely hooped any ways .

Better picture , with more detail, you can see the forward sling points, the one on the right has a GG&G qd point and the one on the left has a GG&G loop , a magpul para clip will work with the loop
I have a older magpul sling , I like them better for carrying over the shouleder 2 point and they work well for single point.

So this one is taking awhile to put together but so far I have the Mesa stock adapter, Magpul CTR stock, a Streamlight TL racker for the Shockwave is on it's way and I think it's a KCM gunfighter grip? It was used and came with the Mesa adapter but it feels nice.

Shoten Armory is out of stock on the long slide release so I'm waiting to order one even though it's $45 USD plus $20 shipping. I think I'll add a front sling point and find a sling that can go single or double like me(there's a married man joke...) since the post from GH6 has sparked some inspiration.

Last thing I need is slugs. Do the Challenger target ones do ok on charging bears? I have $160 in Canadian tire money I really want to burn on a couple hundred rounds of slugs. I've heard of the Brenneke (spelling) and used to shoot the Winchester rifled ones for deer that came in the 25 round value pack but I can't find those anymore.

Edit; Ok one more last thing. After it's finally put together I'm going to see how it shoots with just the front bead before I decide if I want to add a rail and put my red dot on it. If I can hit a pie plate at 25 in a hurry I'll leave it as is. If not I'll try a red dot so I'll probably need a cheek riser.

Second one more last thing, Jumbo safety. Anyone try the CDM one I can only find at safety named non-site sponsor? Looks pretty cool. And scary.

Challenger target slugs are very similar in construction to a Thug slug.
Thug slugs are also used in the Score brand competition slugs.
They are quite accurate but fragment easily upon hitting flesh. The gel tests show about 9” of penetration. A slug should be getting more like 15” to be reliably counted on for black bear defence.
I’d want a bit more for grizzly or polar bears.

Mind you the gel tests were for full power 1500fps plus loading a. Maybe the reduced 1300 FPS in the tactical slugs would lead to less fragmentation and more penetration.

Personally I just use other slugs for serious purposes. The Federal tactical tru-ball in particular.

I'd suggest using the Challengers for 'practice' or HD, NOT for Bears. I'd suggest 3"magnums at around 1600fps - full magazine, NO 'waning shot' - you might only get One shot. :(
I have a 14" Hatsan MarineGuard w-stock and can get 'pie-plate' at 50 with the front bead, using the Challengers. And I think the shiney SS of the marineguard will mesmerize a bear anyway
