Got a couple shot out M1’s in to rebarrel and noticed this doozy.

Given just how shot out this barrel is, it seems the rifle was most likely suffering from short stroking due to gas escape around the bullet and drilling the gas port larger is how you should NOT fix it!!

At this point you are a test pilot!

How can you know for sure just how much pressure you are letting through that hole?? It’s romantic to think someone treated it like a Shuster gas plug and drilled the hole in one thou increments until the rifle cycled, but realistically I would wager this was not the case.
Too much pressure will inevitably lead to a much more expensive fix than a barrel.

Years back, when the internet was in its infancy, I had a 7,62 NATO rebarrelled M1 rifle that wouldn't cycle. I tried to sell it as a project rifle and only got a couple of low ball offers.
Looking on the net, I found that the gas port hole on the 7,62N was supposed to be larger than the one for the .30/'06. My 7,62N barrel had the smaller hole for the '06.I ordered the next three larger letter drill sizes from Brownells, and after drilling the port with the next larger drill size, with a pencil in the barrel, it ran very well.

Sounds like you took a methodical and well thought out route.
I bet the hole was indistinguishably larger with the naked eye once finished.

There was no mistaking the hole shown above.

I have been thoroughly enjoying the series of M1 kerf̣uckery you've been posting lately.

Ha! thanks!

I’d like to post more and will as time permits.
I’ve learned a lot from the generosity of users from here and other sites and want to give back as much as I can.

If nothing can be learned from my posts I hope they provide at least some entertainment!

Man, the stupidity is unbelievable, reminded me the norinco stock wash machine tread. I just can’t believe that!

The gas port on a 30-06 Garand is .079" and I have read that the 308Win Garand barrel should be .089". They are indeed indistinguishable from one another without gauges. That hole is huge.
