The largest country in Latin America has made a deal with one of the oldest names in the firearms world to equip their police with a modern new handgun.

Media outlets in Italy and elsewhere reported earlier this month that the Forca Nacional de Seguranca Publica-- the Brazilian national police-- and other law enforcement agencies from several Brazilian states have signed an agreement to adopt the Beretta APX series pistol. The 57 million euro ($70 million) contract allows for as many as 159,000 9mm pistols to be delivered over an 18-month period.

The Brazilian military and police forces for years have used domestically produced copies of the Beretta Model 92, and the company's ties to the country go back to the late 1940s.

"We produced pistols there until the 1970s when we decided to sell plants and licenses to Taurus and move to the United States to found Beretta USA," said Franco Gussalli Beretta, president of the company.

According to Beretta, the APX models for Brazil will be made in Italy. The Brazilian contract is not the first agency to adopt the gun, as police in France, Italy, Poland, and the U.S. have selected the pistol in recent years.

The pistol selected is the Beretta APX percussion, which is increasingly establishing itself as a reference product and is currently also in the running to equip the New York police . The APX is, in fact, one of the safest and most modern platforms on the market: thanks to the ambidextrous controls, the high ergonomics and the modular design it is well suited to different user morphologies and combines the most innovative functions with the legendary reliability that gives always distinguishes the weapons of the Gardonese company in every operational context.

The Beretta APX is a workhorse and is available in several models, although it is unclear which variant will be used by Brazilian police.

Beretta introduced the full-sized APX in 2017, equipped with a polymer frame and a host of competitive features putting it on par with other duty guns. The APX line, as a rule, features a passive trigger safety, Picatinny rail, three-dot sights, reversible mag release, and interchangeable backstraps, but what stands out most is the slide serrations spaced finger-width apart that run the entirety of the slide and the fully flat trigger. Most models are available in either 9mm or .40 S&W chamberings.

They come in a variety of colors and most are offered in both 9mm and .40 S&W (Photo: Chris Eger/Guns.com)

Show me a better duty pistol.

For the most part - they all offer the same features - more or less. Often it comes down to customer loyalty and also the kind of deal that the company is offering in order to keep their business. A few years ago, Smith and Wesson was offering a certain large police department the M&P's free to the agency, but the armorer's contract for parts and service was where the money was to be made. Often the pistols come very cheap.

I am personally not a fan of the Beretta, but I am sure it is a decent pistol.

In the context of Fanboys absolutely, but I do not base my decisions on the flavourful of the month. I purchased the APX because it was the best SFDP out there at the time, that fit my hand perfectly. The Glock, P320, FN 509 were all in the wheelhouse prior to my decision but failed to make the grade on several points.

They are not all the same, you take all the latest striker fired duty pistols and show me one other than the APX that has "full length" slide rails, there are slight nuances that people don't see or overlook.

The biggest reason for some not liking this HG, is the look of the slide, nothing based on its performance. Yet a block of Lego has Character. Lol.

show me a better duty pistol.

I prefer certain makes/models as well but I don't waste my time trying to convince everyone that "insert your favourite gun here" is without question the best.

I'm glad you love you APX but you shouldn't feel the need to constantly validate your choice.

Thats what I thought.

LMAO...defend, defend, defend but who's attacking?

At least they made a decision. How much longer are we going to wait for DND to decide on what pistol to buy to replace the browning

french police is not using apx. they re using sig 2022 up to 2022 ... some units of french police are doing training with gloc 17 trainers so seems there will be a standard between gendarmerie and police nationale. some municipal polices are using the apx ... gendarmerie will get glock 17.

Loved my Sig SP2022, then sold it on a whim. Now they're hard to find and if you can, they're a lot more expensive. Could buy them for $499 a few years back.

Never tried the APX but I loved my 92FS.
