Short action magnum bolt face

No need to booger up yer No.1. The 45-70 be more than sufficient for most critters, both here & abroad with good boolits at moderate velocities at the closer ranges folks tend to use 'em. I've played with .458x2 conversions years back on Rem 600 builds and one on a Winchester 94 that an old amigo did up. Stout kickers to say the least. The '94 was evil on both ends.:runaway:

You misunderstood... I am not butchering the .45-70, I am selling it to cover the cost of the build. The .458/300 WSM will be built on a bolt action M77 Mark II Stainless .300 WSM. PTG reamer, Hart barrel, Redding dies, I have lots of .300 WSM brass on hand and 2K of the Speer Hot-Cor 350 FNSP bullets. I don't need two .458's, and I will get far more use out of a stainless bolt rifle rather than the blued No.1... rather handy thumper.

I have a .458x2" project on the go - a Ruger 77 (tang safety) short action. Bolt face opened for the belted case. I think that the biggest difference between a rifle in .458x2" and .45-70 might be that the belted case and bolt action are designed to handle somewhat higher pressures than most .45-70 rifles.
Another option for the OP would be .350RemMag.

Hey why not use a 450 Marlin ? RJ

Well going to ask my derail question again. Considering others are talking calibers......riddle me this.

Tiny coastal black tail.....60 lbs on meat hooks. Zero predators.
Typically 30 yards in the Salal.....perhaps 100 over a pond
Rifles going to take a beating....no $1300 shiny Browning 92 need apply
Stainless a plus....very wet/marine

What rifle am I describing?

Yeah, so... I sourced the dies, reamer and barrel... guess I'm gonna do the .458 WSM. This is not as much of a whim as it might seem, since I have been shopping for a bolt action .458 for some time and have a WTB out for a Ruger M77 Mark II RSM... but a lighter stainless rifle would make an excellent guide carry...

Cool ...... What bbl length have you got in mind?

I'm thinking 20"... I will be carrying more than using, but when I do use it will be Muy Pronto.

Probably the most useable of all those mentioned.

With a stable full of .35 cal rifles the Sambar is the last thing I need... the question for me is, do I want to replace a gorgeous No.1 .45-70 with a stainless laminate M77 as my lone .45 cal? It seems that may be the case.

I will bite: a stainless Marlin 336 in 30-30 with a laminated wood stock.

Here are a couple of shots of the Ruger 77 conversion to .458x2". Bolt face opened out, magnum extractor, and, the rifle.
Rifle is chambered, headspaced, and ready to fire. Haven't made any cartridges yet - Shortened 7mmRM and .264 are too large in diameter with a bullet seated. Need to get some .458s and shorten those.

That 77 looks pretty rough... and the stock profile looks odd... is it a custom or modified with that hogs back?

I like the looks of that 458wsm. However a 40wsm maybe fun to. Plink with pistol bullets and trail boss and could be loaded up for deer or bear as well
The 6.5s just seem to practical. Plus i love my 2506 to much to pass up the opportunity to use it

The 77 is a salvaged action from the Arctic. It will need refinishing.
The stock is a custom. It was on a rifle I bought in .22-.250. Put the barreled action in a synthetic stock and sold it. Kept the custom stock.

I see... thanks for clearing that up.
