Happy new year to all!! I have that rifle in 30-06 that I would like to use for a custom job, I would like to have it re-barreled in 9.3x62, having the barrel half octogonal half round, with really nice open sights and possibly have a new stock made in the British stalking style or maybe a full length stock with decent walnut but nothing to crazy!! Maybe have the action colour case hardened.... who would you recommend for such a job (in Canada) and how much should I expect to pay??
Does it make any sense or am I crazy and out of too lunch to have something like done to that rifle?

You will spend several thousand $$ on a project that will only be worth $1000, as it will always be a Ruger M77.

Talk to Gary Flach. He has a synthetic stock option that will match your style preference. He builds a nice rifle.

Well I might talk to him cause his name comes up often on here, but synthetic stocks is far from being my style, I love wood and would not consider a synthetic unless I have no other choices lol

Here is a couple of pictures stolen from this site. This is the stock and a rifle built by Gary.

Not that a M77 II, is bad. But this is effectively true. You could probably just sell the Ruger and buy a x62. Or invest some of that custom money and have two rifles. Unless of course your wanting a too pretty to use custom rifle.

That’s my rifle above. Gary does great work. He’s done quite a few rifles for me including custom English walnut stocks. Your build will be pricey but go for it. You only live once

Unless I’m mistaking, I think the M77mkII action is a pretty good one?!?!

Nothing wrong with the action, but spending $4000 customizing a M77 won't make it a $5000 rifle. Which is fine if it is what you want and you don't expect to try to recoup the money. As said ^^ YOLO!

Thank you all for the info!! Basically what I’m after is a re-barreled with open sights in 9.3x62( I already have a 9.3x62 but would like to have in bolt action too) the stock was an after thought and maybe something that can come later! So I thought since I have the rifle that have a good action and that I already have 2 others 30-06, I could get that M77 re-barreled and it would be cheaper than buying a new one at $3000! I don’t mind keeping the same stock for now and having something made later!

Ad for selling the rifle I tried and looks like it is not worth much more than $700-800 so I thought modifying it would be better than selling and re-buying something else!

Gary has a quick turnaround compared to other gunsmiths and fair prices. The 308 Kimber stalking rifle he posted in another thread looks fantastic and I’m not even a fan of wood stocked rifles.

Ho believe me I’ve seen that one and looked at it hard!! Still thought that a re-barrel would be a lot cheaper than that rifle!!

If you’re looking at a aftermarket barrel and NECG sights you’re looking at around $1600 from my experience. If you want the half octagonal it’s probably double (I might be wrong)
