Hello all,

My father is looking to sell a little 20ga AYA sxs in the UK, and I would like to have it here in Canada. Doesn’t have a huge value but I would like it for sentimental reasons. Has anybody on here done that before? I have Googled it a couple times but it doesn’t seem that clear. Any guidance would be much appreciated!

Cheers!

Export from the UK will be the issue, not import into Canada. Your father should find out what he would have to do to export it.

Not at all

1. ask your counterpart in England to call the firearms officer and inform him of permanent export. Literally just a phone call and don’t even need a date.
you will need to give the receipient name and address. Some counties will ask for a copy of destination licence. If in London then they are on the ball and it is not necessary.

2. Follow up with a written letter - Not email - with proof of delivery by Royal Mail and keep this and ask UK owner to keep this until gun is in Canada.

Then you have 2 choices

person or person

RFD TO RFD (registered firearms dealer)

if it is a shotgun and in England it is classified as smooth bore item. The rules are even more relax.

‘I sugggst when things improve jump on a plane - go over there yourself and pick it up. Cost about the same.

The owner in U.K. will accompany you to any airport. Declare at check in counter as SPORTING FIREARMS - please trust me and be precise.

Security will come and take it off you at the check in counter.

Usual handling fee applies. Varies from airport to airport.

you will go through screening and immigration as a normal passenger and once you are through, the same security person will meet you and walk together to customs. You will not be able to touch the case.

At customs , they will enter a written register serial number , destination country and your name and flight detail.

your will be taken to a special room and the firearm will be inspected for serial number.

you will be given a bill of lading.

keep it. If you gun goes to Timbuktu then it’s your only recourse.

customs will inform the corresponding U.K. police force so the U.K. owner does not need to do anything.

he will need to send his shotgun certificate physically to get a VARIATION. No fee involved.

(before you trip prepare a photo copy of the receipient licence - in this case will be you PAL)

that’s it.

while you are in England - go and whack a few dozen deer , do a few days of game shooting and most important go foxing at night with silencer.

You will shoot more in a weekend the you do in a season in Canada

When you arrive in Canada just declare it.

and have an agreement letter or invoice for Canadian customs.

In your case there will be no issues

if you need RFD please PM. I have trusted friends in most counties who you can reply on. They will not overcharge you.

saying all that you know the market value of an AYA 20 - even the royale -

good shooting my friend

if you want to know where to hunt in Europe

you need to buy me a Tim Horton because it’s going to take a few days

Actually

on second thoughts

I suggest you ask your father to inform the police that the shotgun is ‘“GIVEN to you until further notice”

‘yes please use the exact wording”

then English police will not erase the item from your father’s shotgun certificate but will mark it temporary exported.

this way

you will be able to travel back and forth with the shotgun in future years for hunts.

You are leaving yourself a back door as well.

I do this all the time.

I use to fly every week somwhere to hunt or compete in Europe so you really need to know the rules and loophole for all 27 eu countries - now 26

yes this is a better option for you

Thank you so much Ghubert!

So just to confirm, my father would not be able to accompany me to the airport unfortunately. I will be heading over there in the spring hopefully but not sure at this rate, if he could ship it that would be better? We are also friendly with the local gun shop, does that help?

And yes, I left the UK 10 years ago and hunted all my life there, plenty to do when I'm there. Foxes, Rabbit, Pigeons, Crows, Jackdaws and muntjac, ever seen those before? The highlight for me is using my dads silenced shotguns, yes silenced shotguns! Great for hunting around farm animals etc. :)

Great suggestion but no need in this case, my dad has plenty of others I can use whilst back there :)

this made me giggle, i emptied my whole gun collection on the desk in the departure lounge
no special private room for me that day.

how is the EU firearms pass now with brexit?

Not a problem

is there an Interpol rule saying one cannot have more than one licence in one country .........

only problem is the Vatican City - haven’t worked that out yet and I don’t know any cardinal who hunts either

there are a few underground shooting ranges in Monaco so that’s not a problem. By invitation only

Andorra is an enigma because firing anything other than a bow / arrow will end up in Spain

San Marino has been completely shot out since 1700’s

No politics here but here is the take from a retired journalist friend also ex script writer for spike Milligan - he is extremely funny.

This is from his recent email to me. By the way he is also a shooter.

================================

“England will sort out some kind of arrangement when Macron stops sulking.

Auntie angie is always cool about things because they are despite selling all the nice cars to the English.

Italians can always be bribed - sorry funded through trade subsidies

and everybody else follows like a dog because they are “net takers” of the EU, only those who pays has a voice in anything.

Now when Scotland leaves that’s an issue. Where is Phillip and Charles going to do their fishing and stalking ? Can’t let that happen.

Stopped worrying about Wales since 1800’s.

As for Ireland, it’s either Novichok since nobody ever dies of Novichok - (it’s safer than getting SARS-COVID 2)

or alternatively a new strain of genetically modified potatoe blight will do the job and they can emigrate to the middle of Canada.

======

I deny personal responsibility for all the above opinion.

happy 2021 boys.

by the way airlines charge by the weight so if you are prepare to pay by the pound - they take VISA if that helps

The above email is entertaining
Not sure if my welsh wife would agree lol

Yes he is 89 years old and we managed to get him to use a computer about 10 years ago.

I have hundreds if not thousands of sketches like the above

absolutely hilarious and as one says - gets your knickers in a twist

don’t tell me - you also live in the middle of Canada ?

spike passed unfortunately

so tell us about hunting in your part of Canada

Always wanted to bag a Chamois or Tahr in the prairies

i read somewhere it’s right hand drive in the prairies as well

Thanks Wendell, what's the context here. After clicking all the links, I guess I need an import certificate? I have browsed through them all but still don't know exactly what to do lol

For the import certificate to Canada, you can get it from DFAIT on their EXCOL system (just google EXCOL). (It's actually called International Import Certificate - it's a document showing you are authorized to possess the firearm in Canada - it's used for all firearms imports) PM me if you get stuck there. Do you need it for exporting out of the UK? Maybe not but it makes your life a lot easier in Canadian Customs upon arrival.

It is a lot easier to carry the gun in your checked luggage, and a lot easier to arrange everything in the UK, but Airlines will take them as cargo as well so that is an option.
