Hello fellows, can anybody tell me what kind of documents/licences one needs to purchase and own WWI and WWII era machine guns? To be more specific, I'm refering to MG's like Vickers, Maxims, Browning M1919s, and MG-34/42's. I'm not sure how it works but on the net and youtube I see quite a few individuals owning machine guns I listed above, so I'm curious if it's legal to own one (or few) in Canada today? Sorry to be a noob sighs.

The only other alternative would be to have a Movie license, but I don't know how that works, and no-one's really told me much about them.

Suffice it to say, unless you have had one continually since 1978 in FA, or a Converted Auto since 1994, you'll likely never own one that actually fires.

Probably the only practical option for you are the commercial semi autos. Versions of the Browning guns, MG34s, STGs, MP-38s, etc. are available. It will help if your wallet is thick enough that it is uncomfortable to sit on.

Thanks guys for the inputs. Well I don't own a movie license, so that's kind of out of the question. Can you tell me though what does it mean to be "grandfathered"? Does it mean I have to be of certain age? And I guess converted semi-auto would be the only alternative, but can you tell me if it's in semi-auto, what would be the fire rate of, say, the Vickers?

Thanks guys for the help, I'm learning more from your responses than all the googling I've done in the past few months !! :)

as a converted auto owner if you did not have a ca back in the 90's you will not be able to buy one as the govt will not allow any new collectors to buy any ca's. they are not much good these days as they are dust collectors as they cannot be taken to the range to be fired. there are a few newly made semi autos out such as the mg 34 but be prepared to pay big bucks for them, all ca guns built in ww11 are restricted to buyers with ca on the card, and us collectors are very few in Kanada.

grandfathered = you owned one before the new rules went in place, so they said you could keep what you had (in some cases you may also pass it down to your heirs) No new ones may be sold.

Thanks Coyote Ugly, actually Marstar's MG34 does look tempting. Do they have newly made semi-auto MG42's? Just curious if not the MG34 is still good, just want to make sure. Do you think they're out there?

We have the same problem South of the border. No new guns can be built.
However you can go through the paperwork and buy an exsisting one. Only problem with that is there is a finite supply and prices have skyrocketed because of that. There is only one other option. Many guns in the 50' and 60's were sold as registered de-acts. If you have the original paperwork, they can be re-activated.
We do have companies making semi-auto versions here as well, and they can be owned by anyone. Of course I have always though that owning a sem-auto machine gun was the equivalent of "kissing your sister";)

Hmmmm.......
about this "grandfathering"...... what if a person wanted to own one and could not because he/she/it was disqualified for reason that they were not grandfathered, and the fact is that they were not old enough to own one at the time they were legal, hence could not possibly become granbdfathered...... this is discrimination on account of age and shuld be actionable in a court of law, I would think.

Just my counterbureaucratic mind running off at the ego......

I used to own a fully registered L1A1, I can prove I owned it (with government issued paperwork). Now I can't own it. I also used to own half a dozen short barrelled handguns, and 32 calibre handguns, and I can prove it, but I can't own one now (same goes for the AK's and other fun stuff.) I owned these starting at the age of 19, now that I'm middle aged the government says I'm not as safe as I was then, and can't be trusted with them any more. Good Luck with your argument, let me know if you get anywhere with it.

Ian, I am basically in the same boat as you. I still hold all my original paperwork and registration certificates as well. I owned converted autos and prohibited class handguns but never jumped on the POL/PAL bandwagon when it first arrived on the scene and I let my FAC lapse. I then sold my CA's and gave my handguns away and now I am screwed for doing it. I should have swallowed my pride I guess and taken that jerked off Canadian firearms restricted course and got my retricted PAL and re-registered my prohibs. Even though I now have my PAL, I can never legally own any of these class guns again. That SUCKS! personally I don't think it will matter much though as you can be guaranteed that if and when they start seizing guns, those would have been the first to be taken. I don't have to worry about that anymore. GRIN

FULL AUTOS;
There is the option of getting and industrial/manufacturing license, very difficult, but possible.

Remember that with FAs and CAs you must now aso be registered with Controlled Goods Canada.
