Hi All

Just curios if many F-Class Open 30 cal shooters on here ? I know its not a common caliber for this because of the recoil, Im doing this build more for fun than the competition side of things and to shoot with a buddy on a regular basis, Im not sure I can see out at 1000 yards lets alone shoot that far.....

300 PRC
Defiance Rebel Single Shot action
Triggertech Diamond Trigger
Benchmark 1-9 twist 30 inch truck axle barrel
DimaRS F-Open Laminate stock
DimaRS Trigger Guard
Kahles 10-50x56 Scope

I just need to pick up some scope rings ? thoughts, I see DimaRS also sells some pretty neat looking rings

How often can you shoot, or may be if I put it another way ,

how often can you practice especially in relation to wind call and how many 600+ ranges within 50 miles from home.

That will determine how well you do.

Open class is no child’s play.

everybody can afford the lastest and baddest equipment

so first thing I say to new shooters is don’t think you can buy

accuracy or

consistency

ultimately cones down to that

i have been whacked by experience shooters with equipment which is not the latest “vogue’ but he knows his wind

stop worrying about equipment

I am guessing you have 12,000 bucks already invested

shoot at least twice a week or more

and get a shooting buddy or mentor

hope that helps , I know is not what you want to hear but I can assure you

you will come to the same conclusion in a few seasons.

Thanks for your input, you know what they say about the word assume !

I shoot 3-5 days a week recreationally when Im off work which is about 6 months a year so I have an idea about how to pull a trigger, most of my shooting out to a 1000 yards is with hunting rifles that weigh 6-9lbs scoped so Im sure this F-Class stuff will be a little different but Ill give it a whirl.

I do have a wood stocked 6CM built on a Carl Gustaf model 1900 target rifle with a JC custom barrel that fits into your mindset !

Sounds like a sweet build. Not sure what most F Open guys use for rings but I would throw that Kahles in a Spuhr mount personally

I have ran a 300wsm shooting 230gr bergers for the last 5 years. They are alot of fun as long as you can manage the recoil, most guys dont shoot as good with them. Thats why most guys run the 284 win they find they agg better running it because of the reduced recoil. Running the 300 prc you might want to look into a RAD system. What are you planning to run for a front rest.

I have a SEB joystick Bipod and a SEB Standard Rest so Ill see which one I like better, I used the standard rest with my 6CM and its a pleasure to use so will probably go with that.

Im hoping to shoot the 245 Bergers provided the rifle likes them, the Bergers are a pretty forgiving bullet from what Ive found so far.

What speed are you planning on running the 245's at? I would love to hop behind it and run a string with it and see how the recoil compares to the 300wsm. 230 seirra's might be another option.

Well I was running them in my 300 PRC hunting rifle at 2895 with R33/215M primers. so anywhere in there depending on what node they will be accurate at.

Scope rings Your Kahles (nice choice) deserves high end rings
Near Alpha mount

.30 cal, the WSM is the preferred choice shooting Berger 215's at 2920 it produces top accuracy and is on the high end of manageable recoil check out US F class 2020 Nationals back to back mid range winner

As Mystic pointed out some military ranges have template... Velocity x bullets BC if in doubt double check

Keep in mind guys that F Class is not a group size game. It's a scoring ring game.

That being said, when a bullet breaks the line, it goes to the higher value.

All other things being equal, the 30 call by virtue of diameter alone will on this basis produce better scores.

Key point is all things being equal, which they are not.

The energy required to push the heavy 308 round translates to mechanical stress on the system and the shooter. This makes accuracy more difficult to maintain over a weekend of shooting.

I helped spec out a wild cat for a buddy of mine so he could run the 220 to 240 grain bullets using around 80 grains of powder. He admitted to it being hard to take, but for the rest of us on the line it was just as bad and nobody wanted to shoot with him.

Just understand these big guns can be hard to tolerate over a weekend of shooting even if you can shoot it well in small shooting sessions.

Another point is that long range shooting is much like golf. You need a rifle for every shot.

What I mean by this is that big high BC bullets have the greatest advantages in high wind or a fast switchy wind with overcast conditions making mirage hard to read.

In calm or predictable conditions, the smaller rounds usually outperform the big hammers because its an accuracy game.

I've known guys to run a 6BR at 300, 500 and 600, then switch to something bigger for the long range stuff.
