#2 above...too late and I can confirm that it is a press fitted barrel, futile to try to remove.
It may seem to be a press fit because it's fully seized up, but I can assure you that every Cooey-Carcano has an Austrian barrel THREADED into the adapter, which is made from the stub of the original. The set screw was merely a belt-and-braces precaution that, as you've discovered, was unnecessary. I've taken several apart over the years and none of them gave up willingly!
