I picked up This old shot gun/rifle from an Estate.

here is what I know...on the top between the barrels it says "BEST ROLLED STEEL"
On the side of the reciever it says "MACHINE MADE".
The shot gun bore looks clean.
The rifle barrel looks good with good rifling.
It has play between barrel and reciever.
stock is cracked "PICS"

I am going to be selling it as soon as I find out what the heck it is.
dont know the year or calibure.

how does it come off ? there is NO screw ?

Tug down on the muzzle end of the forearm. It should just pop off. I think that is called a Hackett style fore-end fastening method.
The "machine made" marked guns that I have ever seen were from Belgium. Pictures of the barrel flats and action flats will tell the story. May not be nitro proofed. Probably 2 1/2" chamber on the 12 ga. side. Its a wall hanger so whatever wall hangers are worth - a couple hundred $.

I had a similar piece that was registered as a 38-55. It was actually a 360 BP express. Mine had a 4 groove bbl that cut grooves so deep that a forced through bullet wouldn't hardly roll on a tabletop.
Mine used resized 30-40 Krag brass.

well thank you very much for taking the time to help me identify this old Fire arm

I drastically overpaid for it I see now.

I think I will stay away from these old boom sticks.

got suckered again.......LOL knowledge is expensive !

Unfortunately, with the gun being loose on face, its best relegated to one of your walls.

But don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Mine was in worse shape and I traded it for an antique in 44 Russian. Cape rifles are a step or three above S x S's in desirability.
The OP's is in better shape than mine was.
The purists will wail and pull their hair...I see a 4 - 5 hundred dollar piece with the right buyer.

The McKinley tariff of 1890 put an end to the import of quality guns to North America by increasing their cost stateside by nearly 50%. It was a means of protectionism for US-built products. I know we are in Canada but the gun business and manufacturing practices followed what happened in the US due to market size. Belgium stepped up to export the cheapest possible guns that could in some way compete against the American-built guns despite the tariff.
This particular gun would have retailed for around $20 in hardware stores and for instance Sears catalogues to be competitive against maybe a domestic side by side selling at this time for $30. They were cheap and sold. The "right buyer" is a sucker. A person could spend $2000 restoring this one to find they have a gun not worth $750. The term JABC is a little unfair because many high quality guns continued to be made in Belgium, just not those sold to North America at the lowest possible price point.

I would tend to disagree... Sometimes the right buyer is somebody who wants a unique piece for the wall in their bar. Run of the mill Belgian side by side 12 go for about 200 bucks. Cape rifle has a lot better stories to go with it over beers. Nobody's going to shoot these things but a purist... And purists look down on them because they're Belgian.
I shot the one that I had... Just because that's what you do. Because you don't think it's worth anything... doesn't mean that it doesn't have value. Calling people suckers because they don't adhere to your norm...seems somewhat small minded.
I helped an older relative move about 40 pieces like this. Didn't see the buyers that I connected with the pieces as suckers...often they were a friend who wanted one over the bar.
And really...what is 200 bucks...diddley squat these days. I've spend more filling up pickup trucks.
So for the equivalent of 4 tanks of gas ( in a 'Normal vehicle') you can have a Cape rifle for your man cave?
Winner, winner...chicken dinner

It seems then tokguy that we do agree. It is a wall hanger, not a shooter. I was not aware that wall hangers had a value > 200. And no slight to Belgium as a gun making center as I have had and still do have some dandies.
