Remington 600 Mohawk

I bought my wife a Mohawk for her first anniversary back in 78'. She didn't use it much ( the first buck she tried to shoot with it looked back at her with those big shiny eyes and she couldn't shoot) so sold it to buy a new sewing machine ...I was pissed at the time but she still uses that same machine at least once a week. I seem to remember hers having a vent rib barrel tho.

The original 600 had the vent rib and 18 inch barrel. Then they came out with the 660 with no vent rib and thinner 20” barrel. Last model was the 600 Mohawk which had a thicker 18 barrel with no vent rib.

OP, I’ll have a look around home here. I built a semi custom off of one in 6mm Rem and I’ve still got the barrel, stock and original trigger guard kicking around somewhere. If I can turn it up, you can have the blade you’re looking for if you pay shipping.

Buckmastr, I stripped the stock first with a chemical varnish remover. I then sanded the stock in a usual manner, with care around the checkering and maintaining a sanding direction with the grain. I then hand finished the wood stock with 8 applications of boiled linseed oil applied with finger, rubbed into the wood. After each application following a thorough drying, a light sanding using fine steel wool, then the wood was wiped down with a tack cloth prior to next application. The wood was quite pale in colour once stripped and sanded. I had thought about doing a water base stain prior to the oil application, but thought the light colour might be a nice contrast to iron (that and I didn't have any water base stain on hand, in the middle of the inital COVID lockdown), lol.

Is there a reason the rear sight is mounted backwards?

Yes there is, I'm an idiot! lol. Thanks for the catch. Actually it was mounted like that when I picked it up, I imaged prior to and during teardown, then used the images for reference on reassembly, so I will use that as my excuse.

Looks Great. Your rear sight is on backwards. For the front sight I measure 0.4285 height for factory steel sight. I see epps has Williams fibre optic fire sight in heights of .406 and .450..The medium width one is probably best.

Great information, I thank you Sir. The front sight is the one remaining item required.

I bet you this was done on purpose to lower the rear sight. You turn it down to 1-2 power the higher rear site comes into your variable scope vision. This will not occur at 6 power.
Smart idea actually.

Yes this was the thought process behind the reversing of the sight! Well really, no, I just messed up.

That sounds like a great offer, send me a message if it turns up. I would be happy to take you up on the offer .... thank you.

Thanks everyone for the insight and great comments on the Mohawk. The story behind the rifle, is my father-in-law had commented about his Mohawk, which he had long since sold and kicked himself ever since then, for parting with it, this after shooting my Tikka Battue. Since then I kept an eye out on the EE looking for a replacement, which I could redo and give to him, thus righting the wrong that he committed that fateful day. I was lucky enough to find one in the 6mm and that began what you see now. Once I aquire a front sight the gun will be complete and then handed over the father-in-law to enjoy once again. The gun that started this madness below .... true story.
