America wanted the best

One thing I always respected about the USA. They realized that not a single man in their own country had the skill and ability to build a practical semi-auto rifle. Therefore, they hired a Canadian to do it for them. The decision showed true wisdom.

Interesting to see which parts stayed pretty much the same, and how much other changed compared to the final production model. The trigger group sure changed quite a bit, as did the trigger guard. Plus the reciever is very different as well, only 2 "legs" and not 4...

J.C. Garand may have been born here, but I believe that by the time his rifle was adopted he was an American citizen.

Maybe witty comments like yours is why Clancy is considering not posting his information here in the future.

My feel for the Garand is great, I find this rifle fits my face perfectly...The Lee Enfield need a cheek piece so my eyes line up with the sights...the K98 needs too much sinking of my cheek into the butt...bone to wood contact.
The Garand's fit (cheek to butt) for me, is perfect...considering myself sort of average, I suppose it does offer a best fit for most shooters...not to mention other features. My Garand feels my liking for it and gives me the odd double tap firing when pressing the trigger gently (like if the trigger was a tube of tooth paste)...

Then I stand corrected, however, being an ass towards someone by using Canadian liberal type anit-Americanism still is not right.

What was the feed type in 1925? I don't see an 8-round en bloc, just stripper clips

I think that rifle in 1925 was the one he was working on, that used the cartrigde "primer" as the means for the semiauto action, and was still using an internal mag with stripper clips.

As for the above comment, I think Bigbill was making it with tung in check. Garand was hired because he showed some promise with a machine gun he was working on during WWI, not because he was a Canadian....

Sgt Striker,
Sorry to tell you this but Mr John C. Garand did become an American citizen. I have a copy of his US Citizenship Papers.
Thanks again
Clancy

Yes, I stand corrected, I guess I thought I read in one of Scott Duffs books that he never took US Citizenship, but now I see that's not true. I guess he became a Yank in 1920. Oh well, we all have our faults.... ;)

I am sure he became a Yankee for tax purposes.

How about the Lee-Enfield for a multi-cultural firearm series of designs, Mr. Lee had ties to Scotland, Canada, and the USA!

I wonder how he would feel knowing that his design is still in regular use in many of the worlds' nations, over 100 years after his passing from this world? I would say though that for the intended purpose, the Garand has the edge on the Lee-Enfield, although I like my Lee-Enfields, don't get me wrong.
