I recently picked up a Remington 740 in .244 (6mm) and put a new scope on it , sited it in at the camp at about 40 yards just to get it close , it is grouping ok but seems to be keyholing on the target , would this be because of the close range and the bullets not having time to stabilize or another issue ?
I think it was quite dirty before I shot it , first couple passes with the brush were quite stiff when I cleaned it afterwards . haven't had a chance to try it again after cleaning or at a distance yet , rifling looks good and bullet fits tight and doesn't slide in the end of the barrel , so I am thinking its not shot out .
I was shooting 100 gr Federal premium and have read there was a change in the rifling on these for the heavier bullets , not sure if this could be the issue
Any thoughts
