I have a family artifact given to us in 1942 by John Hordal, age 24, a Manitoba farmer.

It was given for safe keeping when he joined the army (Canadian).

We never saw him again.

Is there a way to search his military records and see if he made it back alive?

I went to the Commonwealth War Graves website and the "Find War Dead" search. There is no John Hordal listed there so he may have come back after the war.

I know there is a central archive in Berlin which lists all military personal's history from both world wars, despite the destruction of all archives at the end of the war.
That's where I received my dads complete records from.

There must be something similar for Canadian military personal; try the ministry of defense, they should have the records.

Are you thinking about the archives in Freiburg per chance ? I've been trying to contact them by e mail, regarding my father's military record, never received a response. Do you have contact information per chance ?

The archive is in Berlin if I remember correctly, and they charge a small amount.
Will have a look and get back to you.

Ganderite- you MAY be able to find a Wynyard area local history book on line that might contain a family history and lists of local WW1, WW2 and Korea veterans. Most such veterans lists will indicate those who died in service from enemy action, accident or illness.

Interested as well. My grandfather was a fallshirmjager in the 2nd Div. Bundesarchiv is very difficult to navigate, I'd appreciate leads on where I can get Luftwaffe service records.

Here is the website of the "Bundesarchiv" in Berlin, where I got all about my dad's "travel route"; Dunkirk, Western front, Eastern front until he got shot in the but, then Western front (Ardennes0 again.

Do you have any idea what unit he served with? If so, the unit would have archives of all personnel. Most regiments are still part of the reserves today and would still have records. If you have an idea where he signed up that may help narrow it down. If nothing else you can always try to contact the local reserve unit and ask them to search the archives for someone of that name (may or may not be free).

Maybe try getting in touch with the Legion branch closest to where he lived. The often have lists of local boys who went overseas hanging on their walls, especially the ones who didn't come home.

You might get some family history along with that. Legions have long memories.
