Quickload pressure prediction using Barnes 225gr Barnes TTSX .338

I ran your numbers through Gordon's Reloading Tool.

78 gr of RE-19: 116% load ratio and 93286 PSI

75 Gr. of RE-19: 111.5% load ratio and 79585 PSI

Predicted max load of RE-19: 70.3 gr., 104.6% load ratio and 62298 PSI

Predicted speed: 2835 fps out of a 600 mm barrel

Ted:

Don't forget, the GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out!) principle of data analysis.

On my version of QL, using your input parameters of a Barnes 225 TTSX bullet seated to a COAL of 3.390", using 72 grains of RL19 (109.9% of default case capacity for 338 Win Mag is 86 grains of H2O), I get a MV of 2,870 fps @ 66,244 psi. BUT, don't think it is 70 F right now where you hang your hat. So let's use 32F (0 C) That works out to 2,814 fps @ 61,884 psi. However, according to the "weather in Whitehorse" website, it was -19 C yesterday in Whitehorse. Plug those numbers in & you get 2,761 fps @ 58,231 psi. Just changing the temperature from summer to mild spring weather in the Yukon & we get a variance of over 100 fps & 8,000 psi worth of pressure. That's for a 24" barrel. Change that & you have to start again by inputting corrected data.

And we haven't even begun to input data for your rifle, such as # & width of lands & grooves, firing point altitude & barometric pressure, relative humidity, wind direction & speed (while those last two won't affect MV, they will have an effect on your velocity down-range where the critter is).

Or the actual length of the bullet you are using (I've seen some pretty substantial errors in QL with respect to bullet length, which WILL affect pressure, which, in turn, is a large factor in determining muzzle velocity.

All of that, however, is like trying to guess how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, without knowing how big the head of the pin is!

What is your net case capacity filled to the brim?

It may not be over-pressure at all, depending on your brass' net cc & the firing temperature, as shown above. And without inputting the actual relevant characteristics, you might not even get close to the MV number you were looking for.

It really is Rocket Science & your face is behind the launching pad.

For whatever it's worth, I've been shooting 72.0 grains of RL19 pushing a 225 grain TSX for quite some time in a .338 WM with a 24" barrel, and have been getting about 2740 fps. The load shoots so well, and the critters I've shot with it have been so dead, that I never bothered chasing any extra speed.

just out of curiosity is it a winter or all around load?

It's an all-around load. I tested and choreographed it in the late summer, and it has been used primarily as a hunting round in the fall on deer, moose and one g-bear. The only winter use that load has seen has been on the odd coyote when I'm in a Robert Ruark mood and want to ensure I "use enough gun"... As it turns out, it's plenty! LOL!

What is the COAL of that round?

Thanks for that, Neo. I am going to leave some ammo and the rifle outside overnight sometime, and take it to the range the next day to check velocity.

Will let you all know how the Fed 215 primer lights things up at -30C. I don't hunt bison when it's colder than that.

I do know that a 290 gr Matrix ahead of a stomach full of CF8506 and that primer in my favourite 9.3X62 bounds away at over 2500 fps, and that's plenty.
