OK, so I think I understand that the majority of standard division guns are SA striker fired or somewhat modified 1911's, 2011's, etc. I'm not clear on the DA/SA suitability for standard division. I enjoy shooting 45auto and would like to try shooting major when things get back to normal, would something like a CZ 97b be stupid for standard or would it be OK? I shoot mostly for fun and self improvement so I'm not too interested in bleeding edge competitive suitability, just something that would work.

Related, does anyone know if a barebones 97b will fit in the box? :)

If you're just shooting for fun a 97B will be just fine, it won't compete with a 2011 or CZ TSO but it's certainly not the worst gun that you could use in Standard division. A stock 97B will NOT fit in the box, but just barely. The angle on the bottom of the magazine basepads prevents it from fitting. If you do a little bit of work to the basepads and/or getting some slightly lower profile sights I'm sure it will fit just fine. The main dimensions of the gun are not the issue, just the little bits that stick out.

Thank you for that, that's good information. So I gather that people are shooting TSO's in 40mm to make major, so DA/SA is not particularly a radical choice for standard. That's exactly the info I was looking for. If I'm not mistaken start condition is by type of gun so it's the same regardless of division, first shot would have to be DA?

No, if you're shooting Standard you can start with the hammer cocked and safety on.
