Slowly starting to look at adding a 20g O/U to my collection with the intention of hunting grouse and am wondering what folks like (and what may be available as that seems to be a tough nut with my initial searching).

I'll be borrowing a Mossberg Silver Reserve II soon but what else should I keep my eyes peeled for?

EDIT after some excellent points

- single trigger (is mechanical where is switches to the second barrel after the first pull?)
- ejectors
- aluminum vs steel receiver - either
- removable chokes
- being able to have service done in Canada should I need would be a big selling point I think.

Beretta silver pigeon if they you. If your budget isnt quite that much huglu makes a decent gun for the money. Prophet river has several models in various prices

Thanks y'all, I'm excited to go start reading about all these. Not gonna lie I'm in the 1000-1200 range as I'm struggling with the idea of spending much more on something that will get beat up-ish.

I'm going to check out those huglus, apparently Turkish guns are pretty decent these days and they seem to have a lot of options.

Huglu and most other Turkish 20 gauge O/U shotguns are heavy, relative to a Beretta 686.
Notably lighter Turkish 20 gauge O/U guns that we see in Canada, do not have a reputation for durability.

if i am using it as a field gun or waterfowl gun then I do not want to worry about it getting a few kisses in the field - Citori/Beretta are nice but not so nice if they are scratched up/dinged etc -

SKB model 500 is hard to beat for upland game only in 20 gauge. 26 inch barrels fixed choke IC/Mod.
This is a fast handling gun with lead birdshot. No removable chokes to come loose and just adds weight for not a great reason.

Please explain the difference if a $1200 used B gun or a $1200 new cheap quality gun gets dings and scratches? At least with the B guns you'll stand to get most if not all your investment back years down the road dinged or scratched given the way new ones continue to go up in price and the B guns hold their value? With a $1000-$1200 budget you're not buying a gold inlaid hand engraved $30,000 safe queen, you're buying a good quality well built entry level B gun. You aren't going to get that quality in the turkish guns or budget guns. The scratches and dings argument to me always falls flat on it's face and just makes me shake my head and laugh. Buy a gun that by design is actually far superior in carrying and throwing to your shoulder and balanced for swinging the way a bird gun is designed to do not like a plank with a piece of gas pipe for barrels.

I'd rather spend $1200 on a good used Citori or Beretta than a new mossberg, churchill etc. You'll get alot more gun for the $

Most of us agree with this sentiment but a $1200 B gun in 20 gauge in good condition is fairly unlikely these days. There are a lot of people looking for one just like that. Maybe in 12 gauge you could buy at that price range. Perhaps a Win 101 or a Citori, likely not a Beretta unless a discontinued model.
An SKB 20 at that price is more realistic if you can find one. In general I agree though that someone who buys a used quality gun can resell it without any depreciation unlike the less proven new guns at tempting prices. I don't have much credibility on this other than to say 98% of purchases in the last 40 years have been used guns. Because of what I perceived as best value. I bought a new 1100 in 1977 and a new CZ 455 in 2018. Sold the CZ after 2 years, kept the Remington.
