slug barrel questions

Hello fellow nuts, got back from deer hunting trip last week some issues have come to light re: slug barrels. I shoot a Winchester 1300 as does my brother
i have the smooth bore slug barrel he shoots the fully rifled. I shot a buck
that I hit in the back (should have been in the chest) :confused:and i completely missed a doe at mere 46 yrs(used a range finder):eek:
After looking at some of my brothers groups thinking of going to the more
accurate rifled barrel. Looking at two different mfgers of slug barrels
hasting 1 in 54 twist and or badger 1 in 26 twist. Anyone have any thing good
or bad to say about either? The hastings has a disclaimer re: pre 1999
rem. copper solid ammo. Which barrel would you think would have better accuarcy. I open the floor: opinions, experiences or ideas. thxs cdn1 out.
 
Did you practice with your gun at all? Cause my winny will do 21/2inch slug groups at 50 yards with winchester powerpoint slugs.All i have to do is put the scope on the magic spot out to 75 yards,after that i don't shoot.If i were you I would either practice more or check out the gun shows for a rifled winchester barrell.
 
You should check your equipment......however what kind of slugs are you using? Try the Challengers(they are damn accurate out of smoothbores) I have a 1300 turkey 24" barrel (changed the choke to I.C.)with add-on sights and literally stack the slugs on top of each other at 50yds!!! I have to hold about 7" high for 100 yds. They work great and are cheaper to buy than saboted slugs and no need for a FR barrel!! The recoil is very managable also!!

Who sell Challengers in Canada? I keep hearing about them but I can never seem to find them. Do they have a website?

ryanloco beat me to it! lol......Yeah here in Ontario pretty much everyone carries them.....I shoot everything (saboted slugs, muzzleloaders, smoothbores... whatever tickles me that day) but I still love the versatility of the Challenger...accurate and penetration like you wouldn't believe with I'd say 99.9% weight retention even at long range!:) I get mine at Goble's 519 455 4277
 
A bit of an off question i have a mossy 500 with a 28" barrel I use it for every thing but for dogging found it a bit long. I am thinking between a 24 and 20 inch barrel keep the 28 for ducks. If I am using it for deer slug/ buck shot, 71/2 for partridge, and turkey in the spring which would you go with, and how much range is lost between 24 and 20 inch barrels? thanks

The problem I'm facing is that nobody carries them here. How much are they a box at Gobles, and I wonder is it worthwhile having them shipped? Anybody know how they would perform on Black Bear or Moose?
 
You may want to contact SIR Mailorder. They sell Challenger, but don't list the slugs. A phone call may yield some success...

I'm sure you can probably find a shop closer to Newfoundland than London, but Gobles does advertise that they ship on their web site.

They were $14.95 for a box of ten......but like all ammo and the price of lead they are up a bit...right now they are $16.95/10! I plan on using them on Black Bear next year! I'm sure they would perform great on moose provided that you keep in mind the effective ranges( gun, slug,and shooter) but I'm sure that goes without saying it. You might be able to order directly from Challenger Munitions. You might be able to sweet talk your local gunshop to order a couple cases for a promo deal or something and save yourself some shipping headaches.:)

I love the shorter barrels for slug and for turkey considering that you are "aiming" and a 20" would be fine, BUT , for wing-shooting they can be real "whippy". I find the 24" a happy medium. As far as range goes you won't lose any.....you'll lose a miniscule amount of velocity......you'll lose roughly 7ft/sec per inch of barrel shorter....therefore a difference of 4" would be roughly 28 ft/sec. Not even close enough to worry about!!:)

If I was to replace my rifled slug barrel …..
• Twist – Does a tight twist work better with 12/20 ga. sabots?
• Aftermarket (hastings/badger/other) or Factory (OEM - ie. should I just buy another shotgun)? Who makes the best?
• Quantitative reviews (resources) available online, other than doing the old google search?

If by "tight twist" you mean faster twist eg. 1/28 over a 1/54 twist than I would think that with sabots a faster twist (1/28) would be better! It would work on the same principle that muzzleloader barrels do. 1/54 would be a slow twist where a round ball or close to round projectile is used. These projectiles are usually equally weighted from nose to tail and only require a slight twist to stabilize their flight. Much like a baseball!! A saboted slug (.50 cal bullet) is lighter nose than to tail and results in a tumbling motion and thus require a much faster spin resulting in faster,flatter more accurate bullet. Much like a football!!
Aftermarket barrels: I've heard good things about both! If I was to buy one I personally would look at a Badger with a fast twist BUT and I want to emphasize BUT that is just my opinion!! I've never owned a Hastings but I've heard that they are decent stuff.
Unless you want or could use another shotgun, I would just get an after-market cantilever barrel(if you like scopes or Red dots) for your favourite shotgun! ( I'm assuming you have multiple shotguns):cool::)
If you don't own multiple shotguns than now is the time to rectify that little problem..lol;)
 
I know atleast 5 ppl with a Hasting fully rifled cantilever barrel on their 12guages. These are all remington guns, 870,1100 and 1187. My brother with the 870 can have 3 inch groups with 5 shots at 100 yards. Winchester partition golds, DEADLY accurate. I know 2 guys with remington rifeld barrels on there 870s and they dont shoot worth a ####. I'm buying a HASTINGS :D
