When the guys from duck dynasty made Duckmen 11 the caption read "What A Man Will Do For A Duck" I don't think this is what they had in mind?!
Absolutely crazy news coming out of Reelfoot Lake, Tennessee this past week!
Not a whole lot of details released yet and the hunt is still on for the shooter. I first heard of the news this week on The Duck Hunters Refuge and have been following it since. Pretty crazy stuff.

Does it really surprise you with what is going on in the world ? Happens all the time as a result of road rage. Lots of miserable, stupid people out there. And no end to social media and politicians telling everyone they should be angry about their state in life. Just the beginning.

"But other sources, such as WBBJ Eyewitness 7 News out of Jackson, Tennessee, are now reporting a different account, also according to Thomas, in which Vowell motored up to the blind where Black, Grooms, and surviving victim Jeffery Crabtree were hunting, and asked if he could join them. They welcomed him in, at which point Vowell shot Zachary Grooms.

It was so unexpected, the men initially believed it was an accident, according to the report. But then, Vowell allegedly grabbed another gun, and shot Chance Black as well. That’s when Crabtree charged him, knocking him into the water.

“He grabbed the gun away from Vowell. Hit him with it, knocked him out of the boat, and then he took off with the two injured friends in the boat,” Thomas told WBBJ.

Investigators reportedly believe that Vowell was able to get up and leave the scene.

“The water at that place was shallow, around waist deep. He turned around, and saw that the suspect was in the water. He had gotten up out of the water and was walking towards the bank,” Thomas said."

That is crazy - if true.

Amazing story and one I can only hope the antihunting people don't become aware of. But with the update, it seems like the incident was a regular, if apparently unmotivated, double homicide and not the outcome of an actual battle between squabbling duck hunters. Still bad enough, but not something along the lines of the novel and movie "Shoot" if anyone remembers those. (I see the movie is on YouTube. No imitators please.)

I would be looking hard at Crabtree after this new update.

So far they haven't located Vowell and Crabtree is the lone survivor. It will be interesting to see what the actual facts bear out. One of the young guys killed was a County Deputy's son and Vowell is a well-known long eatablished businessman in the area who owns a lumberyard who has been said to be a very mild mannered gentleman. Something isn't adding up yet and until or unless they find Vowell there is only one account of what went down.

People who have been interviewed by investigators say Vowell had been telling people before the shooting that he was suffering from early stages of dementia. At this point, that information is based only on interviews from people who knew Vowell and not a confirmed diagnosis.

From local news.

Be real interesting if Vowell floats up with a GSW.

Did you read the update as of 1500 today?

Crabtree's story is sketchy in that it leaves no room for speculation on motive. It reminded me of a local story from a couple decades back... a friend was one of the investigators. Three young fellas were planning a hunting trip and another young guy that they did not know well asked to join them, they agreed. During the day, the newcomer shot a beaver with a shotgun... that night while sitting around the campfire they started to harass the newcomer over the shooting of the beaver, in response, he stood up and shot two of them dead before running off... later committing suicide before being found by the police manhunt.

Not the first time there's been violence over a beaver.

Pulled this off The Refuge posts....

TN Resident here as well:

Going the right direction but one or two left turns.

- They were mid 20 college graduates
- It happened on Monday morning between 9-10 am.

Now the fun part.

- Yes the victims were 20 something year olds. Yes the prime suspect is a 70 year old.

Now from scuttlebutt from the rumor mill.

- Yes there is the rumor of swing ducks, sky blasting, etc.

- HOWEVER...it wasn't this group doing such.
Blind # 58 in the Walnut Log Ditch area.
- These guys have their mentor on teaching them the proper ways. The survivor is Jeff Crabtree. Jeff is 58 years old. He was mentoring them that day.

- Jeff has hunted Reelfoot and surrounding area for a long time.

These young men have already been shown the proper way. One was on the Bethel University Archery team. The other was a manager of Final Flight Outdoors gun department. One was the father of a high ranking deputy sheriff. Both of these boys were brought up in the outdoors. Both knew gun safety and usuage pretty well as one can see from their background. Gun department manager, college team Archery squad...police father...

Now here is the twist in the plot.

- Vowell's. The "word from the woods" is this private blind was usually hunted by the grandson Vowell and his group of younger guys. They were the ones that were not practicing the proper well mannered way. They have had their "discussion" at the ramp. It seems like gramps wanted to continue this "discussion" on another day. He boated up and asked to hunt. Crabtree possibly wanted to extend the olive branch. Instead Vowell lost his mind. The two young victims werent regulars of this blind. Wrong place at wrong time sceniro.

- Concrete word is Vowell suffered from early onset dementia.

- If true...Why the heck the family lets the man drive is crazy...worst yet let the man boat...even worse carry a firearm alone?

'- Vowell still on the run...chances are slim he will be found alive.

- Murdered weapon recovered. Lodged shell found. Gun jammed...thats how Crabtree survived.

- Crabtree knew Vowell. Knew of his mental state. Didn't have the heart to kill him since he fended him off and he was no longer a threat. Focus was on boys getting medical attention.

Duck joke
Dying man wants to give his entire estate to one of 3 sons. To determine who is most worthy he gives each a duck and asks them to get as much as possible for it
First son sells his duck for $5
Second son sells his duck for $10
Third sun trades his duck for a roll in the hay with a local woman. She enjoys the roll so much she asks to do it again and she'll give him his duck back. When he leaves, the duck flies out of his hands and gets hit by a passing car. The driver gives the guy $15 for damages.
The third son tells it like this "I got a f**k for a duck, a duck for a f**k and 15 bucks for a f**ked up duck"
He also got the estate

So the only guy that is still alive alleges that the old guy shot his buddies, for no reason, so he took off in the boat with his shot up buddies, and the old guy must have shot himself?

This could get interesting. Not that there has ever been any family feuds in good'ol Tennessee

Cow Bay just east of Eastern Passage used to be quite the s#+tshow amongst the waterfowlers.
They used to blow holes in each other's boats when left unattended. A kind of lime bomb in a glass coke bottle.
Even the fusing let the guilty party make some distance before detonation.
The Real Trailer Park Boys.
Crazy stuff !

PS: No one got shot AFAIK.
But vandalizing each other homemade boats and sink boxes was considered routine business if the owners were absent.
I never ever seen this level of utter foolishness in any of the prairie provinces. And Thank God for that!

Doesn't say he was shot. Could be from exposure.

Years ago in Alberta the wars were over pheasants down south. Many many arguments almost went to gun fire . I don't want to name the nationality of the problem but it was bad . We are talking 40 some years ago.
