Just got my type 81 lmg in the mail, took it apart and noticed there quite a bit of mushrooming around where the hammer strikes the bolt carrier.

Has anyone else had a chance to look at theirs? Is this cause for concern?

This is brand new/unfired so I'm not sure why there is so much damage already.

Are you certain that this was sold as "New" because the wear looks like it was a "Range Demo" that was fired a considerable number of times. Just my opinion - waiting to hear what other owners say...

Normal wear. But not for a new gun ! Check the bolt lugs and see how worn they are. Also be sure to check underneath the redish colored safety plate for RUST.

Mine has this as well, I'm not concerned. It's caused when you rack the bolt carrier back not when you pull the trigger. This part hits the hammer when you pull the carrier back but the back of the bolt is actually in the way when the carrier is fully forward. Cycle it a few times without the dust cover on and you will see it. I plan to file it at some point if it mushrooms too badly.

I looked at both of mine. One has about 40 rounds and the other a few hundred. Looks the same. This is normal wear. Maybe yours has had a few more rounds then a test fire though.

Hey Murray can we see what yours looks like. I know you have lots of cycles on yours. Might be a good info for all...

To be honest I wouldn't be worried about it at all. Its a com bloc rifle and they are not made to look pretty but are made to work and be reliable. This to me anyways doesn't surprise me and defiantly would not cause any functioning or safety issues in my opinion.

Is this kinda soft metal.? wow

Soft is relative. It may be pretty hard metal compared to most, but its evident that the hammer is harder haha. Which is ultimately a good thing cus i doubt anyone would want a major deformity on the face of the hammer. The harder the metal, the more brittle it can also become. Im sure they couldve made both components to be super hard and not deform, but then something may have the tendency to shear off completely rather then get a unsightly dimple.

both of my unfired looks like yours, if it was test fired i couldnt really tell, no marks on feeding ramps, very little on hammer so i wouldnt worry about it.

Sorry to hear u have the same issue i do. Mine was bad, some of the rust formed on the receiver as well. Totally unacceptable IMO for a $1610 gun. Like i get that we are actually paying to receive a much cheaper mass produced gun. But that doesnt mean RUST should be included! I tried to get TI to exchange mine, but they wouldnt cus i had already fired it. Which i sortov understand, but at the same time, between that, and the fact MANY here are receiving models with pitted gas piston covers implies that these things, or parts of them wernt stored right at some point in China. Fuked over by TI AGAIN. Im excited to rant on utube about it haha

Son of a ##### there is some rust on the side of my receiver as well right under the plate. It's not pitted or anything so I'm not sure if it's worth worrying about but that's still a piss off.

Nice collector piece and wall hanger though.

I never fancied the LMG guns, even older ones but got hyped as well. The last LMG I sold was a phosphate and quality was way down from the blued ones I had. The first phosphate was better. It really looked like what you describe here, rusted at some point and painted over with CT rust paint (limited edition, yeah sure). I am not complaining though. With the money I made I bought 2 more Chinese SKS, also a bit rusty, lol. It's just a hobby, enjoy it while you can.

We gotta hold retailers and manufacturers to standards above BS. If we become complacent with BS, the companys wont hesitate to provide us with BS.
