Hi All

Im looking to buy a shotgun in the near future and I know very little about them at this point. Im looking on getting a 12 gauge and Im thinking an 870 Remington but I see a lot of different models out there. Basically its going to be for range use/home defense/possible skeet shooting in the future. I would like something around the 18 inch barrel range but have been looking at a the 8 inch model (Dlask i think?) which of course wouldn't be very good for skeet shooting due to the shorter barrel. Im looking to be spending in and around $400-500 but that is negotiable and Im still looking at Norinco models as well. Thoughts, comments etc? Should I be looking at something other then an 870 model? Thanks for the help and if someone knows of a thread like this already then please point me in the right direction :)
 
First step is to stop calling it a shotty. The next step is to forget Remington 870's as the new ones are crap. The best thin to do is shop the gun shows for an 870 Wimngmaster made before 2000 or an Ithaca 37 or a Winchester 1300, a winchester camp defender with an extra ribbed barrel would fit the bill an cost under 500 possibly under 400 if you know how to bargain.
 
Turkeyslayer is right. The correct term is shot gun or smooth bore! After all we do not call rifles, rifies or riffys and handguns are not called pisties or pistolovers!
 
You can't go wrong with an 870, especially one of those dual barrel deals where you get an 18.5" and a 28" barrel. I'd stay away from the 3.5" chambered 870 Express's and just get a 3".

This shotgun would give you a lot of flexibility in it's use and would be suitable for modification and upgrades since everyone and their dog makes stuff for the 870.

However, you will still go very right most of the time. I've got a couple of recent 870's. The Express Super Mag isn't as nicely finished as the Marine Magnum, but works perfectly. And the MM? Love it with a depraved unholy passion.

I'd buy another 870, of any model or vintage, without hesitation.

Hmm. Mine must be one of the rare good ones then :rolleyes:. I have an 870 express and I love it. No problems yet, and I've fed it everything.

My only ##### would be that the express finish is very prone to rusting, so I make sure to keep it well oiled after every outing. I haven't tried G96 yet, but I've heard good things about it, so I'm going to eventually.
 
there are lots of pumps, Rem, Ithicas, etc that only use 2 3/4 shells. these will fit your bill for now. These can be foundf for 200-250 $ . PM me if u can not find any close I have 5 or 6 that might work. good luck & welcome to the fun club AJ
 
Like AJ said there are lots of older quality guns out there, some in mint condition for a fraction of the cost of a new gun, in a dizzing array of configurations. I'm partial to Remington 1100's;) In the mean time, don't worry about the "Shotty" thing, I'm also a handgunner and we call our revolvers "Wheel Guns".:p
 
You all realize now that Ive been told not to call it a shotty that Im going to do it with even more vigor and determination now...or maybe Ill just start calling it a boom stick :D

Might I ask what specific gripes people have with newer 870s and what is wrong with the Express? Is the Express just cheaply made or does it have any mechanical problems with it?

The Ithica M37 or similar model might be a good idea since it ejects out the bottom as I have a few south paw friends that I may get involved in shooting.

I will look into the other models that you guys mentioned. Thanks for the help any other suggestions then let me know
 
Ejection is of no concern for left handed users. A clear view of the chamber and feeding path is congruent with rapid and safe handling skills.

The 870's I've seen with issues were nothing minor. I've known three shooters who all had tight or improper chambers in their new 870's. I've also seen a couple that would not feed properly. Either due to timing or bad shell hooks. Capp isn't wrong when he says you can go very wrong with an 870. They're not the reliable old shotgun they used to be. Remington's quality has taken a serious nose dive in recent years.

I have a newer Rem 870 magnum and haven't had a problem with it until last week when I had to beat on it to get a #8 shot target federal shell out of it 2X
while doing trap.This sucks because I bought a flat. before that, it ate all I put into her. I still think it's a great gun for the money though.:D

The newer 870s and especially the express are made cheaper and this results in mechanical problems. Too many to list and besides it has been beat to death many times on CGN. The express quality is obvious when you look at it. Poorly finished hardwood or laminate. Roughly finished metal parts disquised under a so called matte finish. It is a rust maganet! Nearly all have rough bores and/or chambers! You may wish to call the express a boom stick. I would call it an ugly stick or just a stick! Norinco Deluxe might be more appropriate. and God Bless all you express or norinco owners who have not yet had a problem. You are truly blessed!!
