hey folks.

are there any commercial .308 loads available in Canada with something like a 110-125 grain bullet, or a specific varmint round? cant seem to find them in any ammo catalogues, not even bullets under 150gr for reloading.

ive heard of people in the states loading 80gr .30 pistol bullets in a .308. or the 90 grain 'plinkers' for use on varmints.
what would happen to these in a 1in10 twist barrel? :)

Been there, done that. The Hornady 85 grain XTP's - surprisingly - tolerate 3300fps AND shoot into about an inch at 100 yards. They're about as devastating to gophers as you'd expect

ive got to try that when all of my reloading equipment arrives and i get more experienced at reloading. ive got around 6 months till groundhog season anyway :)
toying with the idea of taking a .308 varminting next year, for a change. never really occurred to me till now - usually use something like a .223 or .17.

I like the thought of using Hornady's TXP's. I haven't tried those and would definitely like to.

You may wish to consider using .30 Carbine 110 gr. FMJ-RN bullets as well. If you've got a long throat on your rifle, it probably won't produce great results.

I've been trying various loads of Green Dot Poor choice), Red Dot (better results), and now Blue Dot (not done testing yet) with the .30 Carbine 110 gr. bullet. Accuracy, hasn't been great but it's dirt cheap to run for plinking.

"...plastic sabots..." They're notoriously inaccurate.
"...taking a .308 varminting..." Make sure it's legal where you are. If you're thinking of using your rifle for varmints to practice for deer, use the same ammo. There's no reason not to. Unless you're in Southwestern Ontario. Then it won't matter as it isn't legal.

actually i do head south for varminting, although not quite that far south -- no groundhogs in extreme southern Ontario (Windsor area). i need to check up on the regs again. this is around Durham.

and no, not to practice for deer, just to try something different.... and to see what it will be like to varmint with an 8lb rifle instead of a 15lb one for a change :)

no 'buff up' comments!!

with 8 inch groups in a gun that can do sub moa

I used 30.06 Accelerators quite a bit in my youth, and while they were certainly not as accurate as HPBT match grade bullets, I found them to be reasonably accurate enough for groundhogs up to a 100 yards or so, and coyotes up to 250+ yards. I haven't tried the .308 sabots yet, but I will when I get my reloading setup together again and I will give an accuracy report on them. I expect to use them quite a bit if they prove as good as the 30.06 Accelerators.

I would think those bullets need a pretty slow twist. I'd love to hear how people are making out with them in fast twist guns. I know Berger and Hornady both make 110 grain bullets if you hand-load.

yeah you waint discharging a 30 caliber any where in durham execpt at a range some of the locals are fananatical about opressing fun and would love to have a chance to screw us.

the police are also ectreamly poorly trained for the most part and and highly improffesional in my expearance some can't even tell the differance bettween alphabetical and chronolgicaly sorting

well, thank you for saving me the trouble of looking it up :)
i guess im lucky ive only used a .22 cal till now.

ive never been stopped by a CO or cop in Durham. only people that give us trouble there are the city folk that move there and buy some farm to convert into their dreamhouse... then they start the 'save the cute and noble groundhogs' BS :jerkit:

yeah i know the typei hate them just hate them i find the ones who drive on winter roads in lowered cars with racing slicks funn when they end up in a ditch afte rmaking fun of someone for owning a pickup truck odds are they are reall humble when you pull them out of the ditch while your buddys laugh at them
