The 30-30 club, are you in?

My latest or most recent Marlin 336W Laminated stock Big Loop....

Box Label ... on the right .... 25WM (25th day of the month) W for “BlackpowderX” denotes the month of August, and M for the year 2018 ; date of manufacture.

Trigger pull weight : 5.7 lbs. Not bad for a bush gun. Works for me and my lousy skill in deer harvesting.

The big loop is nice and the smooth paracord wrap is nice on the cold, wet hands. Now to get some loads put together and see what this rig likes.

Peace Be To Journey!

Cheers, Barney

Happy trigger? I’m not rushing into any upgrading except for a Picatinny rail up top. I need to crank out some hand loads with various boooolits and do some range testing. No big hurry. This will be primarily a range blaster/tester/having fun rig and back up hunting rig to my Remmy M700s in .260 or .308 (switch barrel).

In the meantime, some paracord wrapping fun going on. I removed the factory wrapping of paracord. Yes it was 7 strand by it did feel Zhinese with a loose weave on the outer skin/casing. I am a paratrooper wannabe from my Battalion days in the PPCLI, so I hung with the jumpers. Paracord through my fingers feels super smooth and tight, not like this cheaper factory from Xhina....

Then I took some simple thinner braided black cord to trial run the length (give or take) of string needed to complete the wrap (about 4’) ....

I left the running and standing ends loose and free (did not trim and melt) so that I could recover the braided cordage for other uses. Then I dug out my USA made paracord in black , 7 strand, smooth casing is nicer on cold wet fingers....

And completed the barrel wrap. Did not do the traditional paracord ‘cobra’ wrap.

Another view of the barrel wrap.... Navy sailor types: this is the same ‘whipping’ used on Manila hemp rope. Exact same approach.

There... all done! Time to oil up that lever mechanism and watch Clint Eastwood (Good, Bad, and the Ugly) movie on netflix shoot the hanging rope from Tuco before he hangs to ‘death’. That’s how I want my .30-30 shooting. Ha ha ha ha.

Peace Be To Journey!

I do have a Winchester model 64 deluxe made in 1953. All original. The bluing is 98%. The original finish is flaking, but there is no scratchs or bumps. Someone asked me why the elevator was at the maximum and this is because I only shoot 150 cast with mild charge of IMR4198 or Trailboss.

I'm looking for a light ish weight CRF with irons, and in stanless would be perfered. But not mandatory.
Man I wish irons came on every gun, like why wouldn't they?

Picked up a 30-30 Marlin 336 R.C. trying to date it

Hello,

I picked up a 30-30 Marlin 336 R.C. (JM) Stamped and no checkering. The serial number is on the lower Tang 4 66x.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Smith81, You should look at a Husqvarna 1600 Lightweight Bolt Action Carbine. 20” barrel, Iron Sights, Walnut Stock, CRF, Blued Steel and very well made. Not crazy expensive either, you should check them out on Tradex. WK

Well I was/am looking for a particular model 94 in 30-30, the Ranger compact.
So far in the last month of getting into the centre fire lever actions it has been a pre64 and a post64 in 32WS.
Very happy with the pre64 1948. Still waiting for the post64 to arrive.

Edit;
The post 64 has arrived, and been to the range, it’s a about 6oz lighter than the pre64, but they both shoot very well. Very happy.

I can't believe it took this long, to be honest.

I just transacted on a nice condition Stevens 325A in .30-30 and it'll be my first firearm of the .30WCF persuasion. I dunno, I've just never bothered with it. I was interested in a 336C through a local shop in black laminate but was too late heading down there to get it, but was still thinking of a brush gun in .30-30 for whitetails, open sights. This one looked in good to very good condition so it should be on its way in the next few days.

Hopefully it likes this Non-Typical 150gr I bought, it was on sale and should be fine hunting ammo.

Pictures of my 2 prized Winchester 94's. My two new babies. Brand new unfired 9422 Tribute Limited Edition1 of 9422 with original box tags etc. and an exceptional find!! An as new Winchester 94AE XTR DELUXE 1986. it looks like it was literally unfired. (original owner claims 5 rounds) I have never seen blueing or checkering like this. The mirror flawless finish and the wood and Fleur de Lis engraving are just gorgeous!! Couldn't take the photo without reflections!

I have a Stevens 325A as well but it is chambered in 30-30 AI (Ackly Improved) only problem with that is the magazine is awfully short so Max OAL is limited, still a nice little truck gun.

Now I need to find another one that the barrel is buggered up on so I can make one in 357 Herrett :)

Mine just arrived this afternoon. It's in quite nice condition! Bluing is a bit worn and there's a patina on some of the surfaces but some Crud Cutter and steel wool will clean that right up. Might flitz the bolt, too.

Buffed the stock with some 80 and 240 grit to smooth the wood out and I'm going to run in my usual 50/50 mix of Tung oil and paint thinner. Once it's absorbed a generous helping, I buff in straight tung oil in a few coats with 0 and 0000 steel wool, leaving it 24 hours in between, then hand-rubbing the final application.

I think it's a classy little thing! As much as I love reloading, I'll probably feed it factory rounds since it's an older design, and it's cheap on ammo anyways. Save the reloading budget for the oddballs.

Pics and range report when it's all done.

I am in the club and love the .30-30. I currently have a Win 94 Centennial 26"OB with a Williams receiver sight and just acquired a Winchester Model 54 in .30WCF. It's on it way to me from Rock Island Auctions and should have it from Prophet River (did the importation) mid-July. Below is the Auction pic of the rifle. Can't wait to get this beauty....

Update: pulled it all apart, gave the wood a very light sanding and buffed in a few coats of Tung oil and left to polymerize, cleaned and degreased the metalwork, repaired a minor crack in the stock, reassembled everything, ready to go shooting.

It's not pretty or fancy but I like it, cycles smooth, mag seems to feed nicely, and I polished the brass bead to a nice shine. This should be a fun shooter.

Received the rifle from Prophet River, who did the importing, and it is even nicer in my hands. The bore is excellent and the rifle dates 1930.
It cost me USD$700 excluding importation, shipping and GST of course.

I got a pre-war Mod 70 (dates 1938) in .30-06 in the same two rifle lot for and additional USD$700 in the same condition, except it was missing the aperture portion of the Lyman 57 receiver sight. But I picked up a very good condition complete Lyman 57 sight in the Kidd Family Auction on July 23rd which looks great on the Mod 70.
