The 30-30 club, are you in?

I currently have my grandfathers Winchester model 94 that he bought brand new in the 1950’s. it comes into deer camp every year with me as it’s a family camp. I hunt with it at least 1 day every year in camp. Great gun to carry.

I’m in the mood to try a 30-30 lever. I’ve been watching the EE, and it looks like it’s the Marlin 336 vs Mossberg 464 vs Winchester 94. I get the Winchester pre-64 advantage- are the new rifles still quality? I could pick up a Marlin 336w for $669 new from a sponsor- but is it better to watch the EE for older ones?

i was out on a back pack hunt the other weekend for 4 days and opted to take my Ruger 1, however the encounters of the deer - screamed to be toting a beautiful Model 94 in either a deadly 30-30wcf or a .375 winchester of sorts :)

maybe next time i will pack in the Model 94, there is something about it---- that the next deer stands too far away from it. :p

Brand spanking new Marlins and Winchesters are both good quality rifles. But there were years for both where they had serious problems. If you get a new marlin, make sure it hasn't been sitting on the shelf for a couple years because they only recently got their problems fixed. If you get a used marlin, look for the JM stamp on the barrel and you'll know it was made before their trouble started.

Winchester is a similar story. If it's not pe-64, then make sure it was made in Miroku Japan.

I like old guns, so I'd suggest waiting on that. If i was going to buy a brand new one, I'd probably buy winchester just because they got their act together first.

I know nothing about mossberg lever guns. Don't think I'm giving them the short shrift out of disdain, it's pure unadulterated ignorance.

Thanks for that.

I ended up getting a pre-64 Winchester- it’s in the mail now!

Got me a nice Win 94 NRA Centennial musket awhile back & fitted 'er up with a Lyman receiver sight. Real pleasant off-hand shooter with hardcast loads.

I have a 1889 Schmidt Rubin converted to 30-30 (as a few imports have been). I picked it up a few months ago for $100, spent more than that getting a scope mount, slapped a spare scope out and finally got to go out and shoot it last weekend.

I have to say, I absolutely love it. Recoil was easily manageable, rifle shot relatively accurate at 100 yards, though I wasn't really trying for accuracy.
Would definitely consider another rifle in 30-30

I own two Marlin model 336's in 30-30. One is a JM model I've got set up with a Williams peep sight on it. The other is a 1973 336 S.C. It's the shorter scout/guide gun length barrel, with a shorter tube for rds. That one is scoped with a Redfield scope.

Do yourself a real favor and save a lot of money. Go into the firearms exchange on this site and find yourself an older Marlin without a safety and never look back. I own over a dozen lever actions, and I'm going to say none made today are as good as the ones made in the last century. Find one of them and treat yourself. Don't you deserve the best? Especially when the best is cheaper?

Just gave my father in law my 30/30 marlin as it was to nice of a gun to go hunting with but couldn’t see it just sitting in the safe such a smith action great gun

Well, I'm now a double member, thanks to the addition of a 94 carbine from 1929 ( and a plug for Prophet River, who's fault it is that I own this now)
Made after the deletion of the saddle ring, but before the change to the sights and buttstock in 31/32

Undecided yet whether that's walnut or gumwood. It tends to photograph lighter than it looks when you have it in hand

There is some discolouration of the action: doesn't look like normal wear, looks like it was removed by some other means. Pity, but if the blueing had been intact I probably wouldn't have been able to afford it.

Screw heads are in-buggered, all the edges and corners seem to be sharp; looks like original finish on the metal, though I suspect the wood has been sanded and tru-oiled.

... and I finally have a long-range rifle... all the way to 2000 yds. F-class here we come.

In my completely unprofessional opinion, it looks like the gun spent a lot of time in a scabbard.

Very nice. That's the condition I usually go for too. Are you willing to tell us what you paid for it?
